The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Who knows oh what suffering wealth brings?

To have wealth and yet know not what to spend.

Paupers are green and never owned any rings,

Oh how they wish they had some to spend!

Abalone, steak or other delicates,

Ah suffer do I for choice of food.

When ale and wine I have but crates,

Drinking some is never tabooed.

They envy, they curse and they beg for cash,

Ah but they don’t know how bad wealth gets,

Whilst they live and eat like trash,

We wonder what broth to give the pets.

Every night we would rack our minds,

Which quilt to use – velvet or silk?

While outside one’s joyful for all little finds,

We worry how to finish all that milk!

While streets provide nothing but chills,

We grumble that the hearth is far too hot!

While wee urchins fall sick with ills,

We ponder ‘bout the leftovers in the pot.

Ah this funny world who envies the rich,

While they reap only what they sow,

Ne’er do they know how we suffer so.

Oh, this comic world who envies the rich!

Please comment =)

A good piece, almost self-mockery after a fashion... full of bitterness yet written from the 'wealthy' viewpoint.

define "wealth"

what is "rich"? B)

thank you very much for your praise =]

it was meant as an irony-based poem between the baselessness of the rich snubbing the poor yet appearing stupid =p

I like this! It did not move as smoothly as I would have expected, but that may just be due to me laughing, who knows?! Thank you for sharing this I really enjoyed.

=laughs= Heehee! I love this...it makes me think of this uber stuck up rich girl I used to know... "It's not fair!! They take 50% of my daddy's money away!"

Hmm ... can't help but feel it needed more of a twist, since I feel the subject matter has been tackled frequently, at least in films such as 'Eat the Rich' through to 'Wall Street'. Now, if you were to nest the concept, go from millionaire sneering at working class Jo, then have the billionaire sneering down their nose at the millionaire, the trillionaire at the billionaire ... and have ever more grotesque luxuries ... see where I'm going?

Technically, all was groovy :D Since I'm really not anyone to speak of, so to speak, I'm not sure if we're here to comment on thematic things as much as the nuts'n'bolts - if not, well, I can grovel later ;)

I liked this - I think you tackled the subject nicely.

There are many many old adages that can be used about what actually constitutes being rich or wealthy. Some of which a monetarily rich person may rebuke as being the poor man's way of setting his mind at ease for not having that which he may crave. Yet still it remains that such matters are best discussed with a dash of humour (mental note for self), much like you have so eloquently done. Bravo :)
