Vincent Silver Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Oh my god,I just saw "Monty Python's Life of Brian". If you haven't seen this...go get it now! Oh my god "Whats so funny about that name,I have a good friend from W'ome named Bigus Dickus!"-Ceasur
Tamaranis Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 At the risk of being spammy... There's really just nothing like that stoning.
Peredhil Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 the Monty Python group produced a number of classic movies, and their telly show was simply smashing. They, and Firesign Theater, pushed all sorts of boundaries which opened doors for other comedians to enter and explore.
The Portrait of Zool Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Reg: "All right ... all right ... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order ... what HAVE the Romans ever done for US?" X: "Brought peace!"
Wyvern Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 "Monty Python's Life of Brian" is definitely appreciated... I saw it a while back, but highlights in my mind include the singing at the end, the feminine rights activist, and the wonderfully random alien encounter scene. Brian's theme song was hilarious as well... In my opinion, "The Meaning of Life" might be Monty Python's crowning film achievement... "Get me the machine that goes 'beep!'" There are still certain episodes of the television series that may rival it, though... Did anyone ever see the "Hiding from Landmines" or "Hunting for Mosquitos" skits? Classic stuff... Cool topic Vincent, the Monty Python crew are definitely comedic geniouses. ;-)
Xaious, Master of Time Posted May 25, 2003 Report Posted May 25, 2003 I absolutely LOVED that hunting for mosquitoes skit. If mosquitos skins were really worth that much, I could finally have money. (I live in Louisiana) Also, you can't forget the Holy Grail "Brave Sir Robin Ran away, He bravely ran away away. When Danger reared it's ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled. The brave Sir Robin Turned about, and Gallantly he chickened out. Bravely getting to his feet, He beat a very brave retreat. Bravest of the Brave, Sir Robin!" ( I know it's not entirely correct, but oh well.)
Vincent Silver Posted May 25, 2003 Author Report Posted May 25, 2003 Heh see, everyone DOES love the Pythons! My fav Python quote: "She turned me into a Newt!" "A newt?" "Well...I got better!"
Tamaranis Posted May 25, 2003 Report Posted May 25, 2003 They did that so well that I just see in it writing and it sets me grinning.
Nobody of Consequence Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 You can't go past Python Anyone remember this? Brian: "You are all individuals!" Crowd: "Yes, we are all individuals!"
Quincunx Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Absurbities and Oleos is buried far, far back in this very Cabaret Room, and is the only humorous writing that comes up to the Monty Python. . .well, 'standard' hardly seems like the appropriate term. . .read it, but post your praises on this thread.
Peredhil Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Those were fun. For the information of the Gentle Reader, an Oleo is a short skit, often involving a song, or based around a single joke. If the Players are skilled, they can juggle a running gag through them. Back in the old days of live theater, many were ad libbed, and tried to set each other up for either great lines, or for failure - depending on the politics and feelings within the Cast. Many a Greenroom discussion (the Greenroom is where the Cast Members could relax out of character, away from the audience, and discuss the nuts and bolts of a performance) revolved around how best to present their comediac fun. Tragedy is easy - every one relates. But Comedy is a Killer. You know, there's no reason we couldn't revive that thread. It's just interwoven silliness, after all... But I agree, comments here. Peredhil whips out his Magic Wand of Eraser, and removes all the extra blank lines that the transfer from Ezboard left in the posts of the archived thread.
HappyBuddha Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 You know, I heard IBM hired Terry Gilliam to make training videos for them just a little while ago - makes me want to be an IBM employee .
Peredhil Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Avaunt! Hear the hounds? The foot is ahunt again!
Canid Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Speaking of the bright side of life.... My new baby brother was born thismorning! Almost a 17-year gap, 'twill be fun! I have two other siblings - we are a very closely-knit familly - and it is also my father's birthday today. Needless to say it has been an exciting day. Cheers to everyone!
Rune Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Congrats Canid. And Python is by far the most uber wicked of them all. I have their songs on CD and a full collection of their skits as well. Holy Grail still makes me giggle when I think about it.
