time ends Posted April 3, 2003 Report Posted April 3, 2003 heres my favorite riddle of all time: 3 men order a pizza the pizza man comes and gives the men there pizza he says the pizza totals to 30 dollars so each man pays 10 dollars the pizza guy gets back to the store and finds out the pizza was only 25 dollars so he goes to the mens house and tells them, then he gives back a dollar to each man and keeps a 2 dollar tip. but wheres the missing dollar. do the math it all adds up. 3*10=30 30-5=25 3*9=27+2=29 but didnt we start out with 30?

The Big Pointy One Posted April 3, 2003 Report Posted April 3, 2003 That's tricky, but it's all about the math. The dollar's there, you just have to do it right. Pretend for a minute, that the pizza guy gives the three guys all their money back. Each man pays the delivery guy $9 dollars, and keeps the extra one dollar. The pizza guy keeps 2 dollars for himself, which leaves 25 dollars for the pizza. The two dollars at the end is supposed to be subtracted, not added (Since, technically, the guys are paying 25/3 for the pizza, and 2/3 for the tip... add that up, you get 27/3, which leaves you the three extra dollars...)

Out of those 27 dollars, 25 are for the pizza, and he kept the 2 extra dollars as a tip. So, nothing is missing. The error is in the last part, where you added 27 and 2 to get 29, when in fact the 2 are already included in the 27

time ends Posted April 26, 2003 Author Report Posted April 26, 2003 ohhhh are you having trouble with my stuff? sorry but everyone is wrong so far... rethink the the whole problem as a whole. the pizza was 25 dollars. the 3 men each got a dollar back, and the delivery boy kept a two dollar tip. so each man in reality only paid 9 dollars each. and the delivery boy got a two dollar tip. ok heres the equation= 3*9=27 27+2=29 weres the extra dollar????!!!!!!~

As far as I can tell, each man needs to pay $8.33 for the pizza (8.33 x 3 = 25) (Actually it's 8.33333333, but whatever)...so the extra dollar went in a part to each guy Basically, Pizza - 30 - each guy pays 10 dollars. Pizza - 25 - each guy pays 8.33 dollars, and the delivery guy keeps the .66 x 3 that's left over from each person so each man pays 9 dollars. The extra dollar? Probably left it back at the pizza place or bought himself a soda. Basically the extra dollar is still with the pizza guy in some form.

If you mean how the $30 was divided between the 3+1 men, it would be, (30-2)/3. Which would be, of course, $9.33, and would, of course, add up. It's all in the decimals/fractions.

That way 9 * 3 = 27, 27 - 2 = 25 and that is how much the pizza cost without the delivery guy keeping his tip. If you add up all the money, $25 are paid for the pizza, each of the 3 guys has 1 dollar, and the delivery guy has 2. 25 + 3 + 2 = 30. (I realize it's been explained before, I just felt like it.)

Each man pays ten dollars. 10 * 3 = 30 The boy leaves the 25 that the pizza actually cost there, and brings five with him. 25 + 5 = 30. The 25 is accounted for. He pays each man one dollar, and takes two for himself. The 25 in the cash register, however, is not touched. 25 + 1 * 3 + 2 = 30 or if you prefer 25 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 30 There is no missing dollar. The equation of 27 + 2 does not apply because the 25 was no longer available and was removed from the equation the moment the boy separated it from the five. As to the other, though, I must confess that I have no idea at all.
