Peredhil Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Black and White -Author Unknown- (Under age 40? You won't understand.) You could hardly see for all the snow, Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go. Pull a chair up to the TV set, "Good Night, David. Good Night, Chet." Dependin'g on the channel you tuned, You got Rob and Laura - or Ward and June. It felt so good. It felt so right. Life looked better in black and white. I Love Lucy, The Real McCoys, Dennis the Menace, the Cleaver boys, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Superman, Jimmy and Lois Lane. Father Knows Best, Patty Duke, Rin Tin Tin and Lassie too, Donna Reed on Thursday night! -- Life looked better in black and white. I wanna go back to black and white. Everything always turned out right. Simple people, simple lives... Good guys always won the fights. Now nothing is the way it seems, In living color on the TV screen. Too many murders, too many fights, I wanna go back to black and white. In God they trusted, alone in bed, they slept, A promise made was a promise kept. They never cussed or broke their vows. They'd never make the network now. But if I could, I'd rather be In a TV town in '53. It felt so good. It felt so right. Life looked better in black and white. I'd trade all the channels on the satellite, If I could just turn back the clock tonight To when everybody knew wrong from right. Life was better in black and white!
Alaeha Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 *Laughs* Under 20, and I see what you're saying. Perhaps I'm just odd. Glad to know I'm not the only person to write in verse anymore, though it sounds as if the poem is old, if you don't know who the author was. Or new and posted anonymously. I suppose it doesn't matter. There's a reason that I rarely watch the idiot box anymore...
Vlad Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 idiot box, eh? I thought only I called it that. Otherwise an impressive poem. I can't say I caould connect... I just love watching all of the kiddie channels (Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network...) If you are looking for a scapegoat, I present to you 'Married... with children' brought to you by FOX. That was the first show (and station) to have a program deviate from the original "perfect family". I can see where the author is comming from, and I find it very clever how 'Life was better in black and white' is repeated at the end of quatrains. A good read.
Degenero Angelus Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I guess I see where it's going, though I honestly can't relate. It's beautifully written, and I thank you for being the catalyst.
Archaneus Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I understand what it's talking about and it was very nicely written. Did you do this and just didn't want to reveal your age, Pered. Lol. Well whoever wrote it, I say good job. (Oh ya, I'm 15 )
Seii Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Yeah, I understand this poem pretty well, even though I DON'T get all the references. ^_- In the sense you just wrote, life DID look better in black and white, Peredhil. I always wonder if I wasn't born at the wrong time....
reverie Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 ...hmm, it's funny... i was born in 1978...yet i can relate to a lot of what you say... prolly because of re-runs and not having cable tv that much... rev...
Blondemoon Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 I can relate to it too....I remember life before cable television, and even after, watching all those great reruns that my parents liked, and that I grew to like too. Well...most of them...could never stand Leave it to Beaver. Yeah, life was better in black and white the way you described it Peredhil...and it makes me think I was born in the wrong decade. (Well I was....used to think I would have made a good hippie in the 60s )
The Portrait of Zool Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 You forgot Gilligan's Island, F-troop, Car 54, Rat Patrol, Sea Hunter, I Love Lucy... Err... N/M.
Blondemoon Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Might be wrong era, but....the Munsters and the Addams Family were always two of my personal favorites.
