Guest Hanna Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 There are a ton of new features on this board. As a result it might look alittle intimidating..but in truth its really easy to use and offers tons of features to make the Pen a more interactive place to be. If you have a question feel free to create a new topic. Ill do my best to answer it and change any settings you might feel need to be changed. FAQ: Can I post HTML? Yes, if HTML is enabled on that specific board then you can post HTML in your posts. If you attempt to post HTML and it does not work, more than likely it just needs to be enabled. Unless the elders wish for a specific forum to not have the setting enabled, feel free to post a new topic and I can change it for you. How do the Code Buttons work? Invision board code is a bit different than most code. If you are not familiar with HTML, its the easiest way to format your posts. Simply click on the button that cooresponds with the code that you wish to use (for example the bold B for bold) and then type whatever you want to be bolded. After you are done typing the specific text you want bolded, click on the B button again to close the tag. You can also type an entire post and then go back and highlight sections and click the buttons to modify the text. Whats the CODE button for? The code button just formats the text to let someone know you are posting code. Its little more than a way to let the text stand out and does not modify the board in any manner. The CODE formatting could also be used in Role Playing games to indicate an event or anything you want to really stand out. Example of the code button in use. Where did my post go? Since this forum was converted from EZBoard, there is a chance a few posts were lost. EZBoard does not give you access to its database, which means to conver the forum its a manual process of stripping away HTML code and inputting it into another database. little things can cause the script to fail, but it looks like most of the posts were brought over. How do private messages work? Private messages are available via this board. You can send a msg to another user by clicking on their name and choosing "send a private message" in their profile, or by clicking on the button under their post. Private messages are 100% private. Even admins do not have access to read them. Once one is sent, it is impossible to remove it from the other person's mailbox. Can I put a picture above my name? Avatars can be used on this message board. They should be no more than 100x100 pixels. You will need to upload them to the internet somewhere to use them. If you do not have an internet host, themightypen.net can host it for you. Just send a small 100x100 image to lain@mindspring.com (or send the larger and I can do the image processing for you). Can I change the title under my name? Once you reach 1 post you will be able to change the title under your name. <edited 1/16> What does the little tiny envelope to the left of the post that has a black dot in the center of it mean? The black dot indicates that you posted at one point in the thread. Its really handy for quickly looking to see if you responded to someones post. Is there any difference between the Quick Reply and the Add Reply button? None. They both do the same thing, one is just a quick and easy way to add a response without loading a new page. This helps for those of you that are on slower connections. What does the go advanced button mean on the Quick Reply? The go advanced button takes your reply that you have typed in the quick reply and loads the Add Reply page so that you can add special formatting if you need to use the buttons and menus. The member forums are available only to those that are members of the Pen. If you are not a member, then more than likely you cannot see them. If you should be a member and for some reason you are not, please post a new post in the Tech Support (Temporary) forum to request for permissions.
Guest Hanna Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 The My Assistant Tool The My Assistant is a helpful tool that shows you some info. To access the assistant click on the link in the upper right hand corner after you have logged in. It gives updated info on things like new posts and other forum activity. Guest Hanna Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Some technical information about the Host. (for those of you that may be interested) themightypen.net and .org are both dual hosted with my other domain names. The server host is phpwebhosting. We are running PHP 4 and the forum runs off a MySQL database on a linux platform. This domain uses a mod_rewrite script to mask the domain... Ok thats it. In case anyone was wondering. ^__^
Guest Hanna Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 This forum had more than 1 page on EZBoard. Where did the posts go? This board system automatically hides any post that is older than 30 days to save on bandwidth. The setting can be changed if you all wish to see posts that are older than that. In the meantime to view the older posts scroll down to the bottom of the page and change "the last 30 days" to "the beginning" and click Go!
Rune Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 Another tip as well: You can center your signature graphic/text by typing <.center> and <./center> afterwards (but without the periods)
Peredhil Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 As a suggestions, maybe an Elder should make this a help file in The Walls of the Pen
Gyrfalcon Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 Good idea, Peredhil, but while looking at the Walls, I decided I wanted to spend some time and see if it can't be organized a bit more efficiently, so adding this post will probably take place on Friday.
