The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Strangely, stepping through these halls again

Seems to stifle my security.

Shyness seeps through the pores of my skin.

My back slouches like it so recently used to.

Shadows dangle on the walls,

Like necks from nooses;

I remember how I used to hang

On their every word.

Reveries of Ivy Leagues that seemed

Twenty thousand some under the sea.

I’m drowning, but not in alcohol;

Though many people chose to escape that way.

Real fairy tales only have Grimm endings,

Like the brothers that wrote them.

And I’ve seen too many fairies crushed

By pelvic thrusts.

Pushing and pushing till it hurts.

The strain on the brain is excessive.

Grey matter overload, explode

When they burst my bubble.

I woke up to reality

In the middle of the Ice Age after the Cold War.

Facts seem meaningless without context,

And I can’t take the pain anymore.

I sweat bullets in the gym

And afterwards, I hail a cab;

I’ve got ice in my veins.

I grow older and older and colder and colder,

I must remember, though, that

Not all snowmen are abominable:

Just look at the one Wallace Stevens crafted.

And I weep for Tennyson’s dying swan,

As it sinks into Tchaikovsky’s lake.

And I know

That this

Is my only escape.

Not death, but art!

As I spread my heart on the canvas,

Searching

For my fugative soul.

yeah, creating things is a good feeling... It's nice to use it to channel whatever rage, depression, joy, greif... you have for the world and your place in it... Plus if you pour enough of yourself into it you get this really kewl endophin high that just make say wow... did i write that?

As far as the soul thing? can't help so much... i'm still on my own soul searching quest...

I greatly enjoyed your use of so many authors and their works, and the way you twisted so much! I think I espically like the line about Ivy Leagers under the sea. Very enjoyable, and its good I think that you've found an outlet that at least you can express yourself. Art, THE arts, what a wonderful thing.
