Like the great oak tree

You stand before me,

Your roots gripping the rich earth.

You hold me up

High above any danger.

I lie in the cradle

Of your branches, an infant,

Shaded from the burning ball in the sky

By your protective leaves.

You nourish me,

Planting seeds in my head

That will one day sprout

Into saplings of their own.

And when the wind whirled

You held me tight.

And when the bow broke,

You were there

To catch the cradle.

But then one day,

I fell from you,

And sunk into

The ground.

The soil was moist,

You had kept it that way,

And so, I quickly blossomed.

I stand before you now,

Able to give you shade

From the scorching sun

And some shelter

From the howling wind.

And I thank you for all

That you have given me

And I am grateful

For the chance

To return the favor.

*Just in time for mother's day! For all those that forgot to buy a card, feel free to use my poem. Just don't plagiarize any of my other poems or I'll be forced to send this guy after you:. LOL. You're all so creative anyway, I'm sure you wouldn't need to use my poem. Besides, these are just my feelings towards my mother. Still, I hope this poem brings out the mother's day spirit, not just today, but every day.*

Yeah, I was just kidding about that, because as I said, I know that none of you would anyway. Ugh! I forgot to write a father's day follow-up poem, though. Oh well. Guess I still got some time.

*Gyrfalcon applauds* This is actually an excellent poem, or at least I think so. I like the progression of the poem, from childhood to adulthood, and the themes and references to other poems you've woven into it.

As always, thanks for your comments, Gyr (I'll never understand how you manage to respond to everything here and still moderate the Archmage UBBs, but I'm sure glad you do). Actually, references to previous poems in this one weren't intentional. I just tend to use a lot of the same imagery. The only intentional reference here is of course to the nursery rhyme "rockaby baby," and that may have been all you were referring to. At any rate, glad you liked it.
