Guest andrea hawk Posted December 3, 2002 Report Posted December 3, 2002 Not For You Immigrants, oh immigrants You dirty, dirty fools Lady Liberty is not there to welcome you That torch she holds is a warning Turn away now or I will burn your home This place is not for you You served a purpose back in the day, not anymore MY family came here when times were hard Now YOU come here when there is a set minimum wage? Get out of my country, You aren’t welcome here Go back to Mexico Go back to Russia Go back to wherever you came from You’re stinking up my air You’re stealing my jobs, And multiplying like cats So your poor family goes on welfare And then I have to pay taxes for your ass. Those vermin children of yours Are infesting your schools Lowering our test scores What’s the matter with you? Can’t you see? I hate you And soon it will be proved, If you don’t get it now, With messages of racism written on the walls In your blood Our economy sucks And it’s mostly your fault. Understand me now, or there’ll be Hell to pay Stay if you choose But you’ll live in a slum With drive by shootings almost everyday My family was immigrants, and they worked hard I am now your “middle class” But rest assured, you will never get this chance This is not a land of liberty and love This country is full No vacancy you see So check out now your time has expired Mainly because I don’t want to get fired It’s not the government that hates you It’s the people, we are one united To which you are not a part If you look around you will see The Streets are not paved with Gold At least not for you.
Peredhil Posted December 3, 2002 Report Posted December 3, 2002 Wow, an excellent social commentary in poetic form. You know, I think you captured the ugliness of what many all too sweet appearing people think late at night. Very very good. You came to the Pen long ago as the girlfriend of a member - but you've sure carved out your own place all on your own since! Keep them coming. reverie Posted December 3, 2002 Report Posted December 3, 2002 pretty harsh... but then again so is most that lies underneath... is interesting to note that you can find that attitude you are discribing with every wave of immigrants that ever washed up on the america shores... funny how the past just keep repeating itself... revery the dreamlost "turn, turn, turn"(byrds, dillion???) the dream continues...
Guest andrea hawk Posted December 4, 2002 Report Posted December 4, 2002 I had to write this poem for school... and everyone was writing about how good immigration was and I decided to write about what everbody really thinks... well maybe not this cynically but still... anyways thank you very much for the compliments.
Guest wordphoole Posted December 7, 2002 Report Posted December 7, 2002 NIce work. To take an ugly thing and cloak it in the raiment of verse.
