This is a translation, a preliminary/bad one of a Bulat Okudzhava poem/song. It's really amazing in the original. If you want to seek it out in song form, try looking for "Nochnoy Razgovor" (Night Dialogue) or "Na Yasniy Ogon'" (To the bright Fire) in one of your friendly nieghbourhood music pirating software thingies. So, anyway, here goes...

--

-My horse has grown weary, my feet are as heavy as lead

Oh tell me where I must go, please be kind

-Along a river of red, my love, along ariver of red

Go along the river, my love, the blue mountain is not far behind

-But where is this river, this mountain? My horse is tired

Please tell me, how do I get to this place?

-Towards the bright fire, my love, towards the bright fire

Go to the fire, my love, then it's easy to trace

-But where is this fire, please tell me, why doesn't it burn?

For years I've been walking through darkness, it cannot be true

-The light-keeper must light it, my love, but he's slept past his turn

The light-keeper's sleeping, and there's nothing that I can do

So he sets off again, in the dark, his mind full of doubt

He knows he's alone and that no one can really help

-What is it you've lost, my love - I finally call out

He answers

-If only I knew that myself
