The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Written for my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary, which occurred a few years ago, posted here to be saved for posterity (since I lose things).

Many family "in-jokes" so it really won't make sense to any of you...

To the tune of "A few of my favorite things."

Dad training collies that bark in a whisper,

Taking a bath with a bro’ and a sister,

Mom doing laundry after we're all in bed,

These are a little of what’s in my head.

Tracing the veins in Mom’s hands while in church,

The world when Bob Edward’s shoulders are your perch,

Sitting and twirling Mom’s multi-gemmed ring,

These were a few of my favorite things.

Orange school bus birthdays,

Impromptu family plays

Dancing to the Monster Mash

I think of my family and all of our friends…

It all comes back in a flash.

Baptism of fire for a first-time dinner guest,

Howard’s “amen” while Dad drew his long prayer-breath,

George, Angel, Mary Ann, Andrus and Kit

We welcomed the world into our house just a bit.

Cows, horses, cats, and five kids weren’t too tough,

Learning to walk by Jet’s side clinging to his ruff,

Afternoons spent on the beach with water-skiing galore,

All of these fragments and so many more!

Dad riding horses or pushing my swing

Dad writing songs that all of us would sing

Coolie's cool in Black Velvet - still our man

Humming the ball in ‘cause we’re Twins Bball fans

California road trips,

La Brea tar pits,

Left at the Doc' or shore of lake,

These whirling twirling thoughts –

How much more can we take?

Last Damn Wilson changed to Larry D.

Tim’s catapult trashed by Mom anger thoroughly

Mom at the church and Dad at the golf course

Penny and Patti in the barn with a horse

Black skillet eggs, morning Postum and toast

Dad, Bob and Bill and the hunting they’d boast

Chill sea-spray on the Oregon coast

Mom’s fantastic Sunday dinner roast

Skiing on New Years.

Twenty degrees below,

Dad smoking cigarettes while shivering in snow

Richard so scary at the bottom of the stairs –

Mom late at night mending our tears.

Mom always there through the thin and the thick

Nursing so patiently when we were so sick

Correcting school papers late into night

Her loving arms soothing away a night-fright

Mom talking to the Principal about Ms. Crouse

Me lying in sunbeams while she vacuumed the house

Walking through Yellowstone, just she and I

I love her so much I’m beginning to cry!

The typing, the correcting on projects come due

The way that she’s always there for me and for you

Playing her cards with Dad and Gran’pa Jack

Slipping us money behind our Dad’s back.

Dad at Orofino,

Memory of Hell,

Indian stories that were told so well

Blu Mundy playing piano at night

Describing Asiatic land bridge and the Indian’s plight.

I’m so far away

Here in Germany

Half world lies 'yween me and you

But soon I’ll be flying on North-Western planes...

So I guess that this song... is...

Through.

You'd be amazed how well poems like that come through even to those who don't have the memories. Most of it still makes sense and the love is apparent.

How neat. :)Edited by: gwaihir1 at: 11/3/02 4:12:58 pm

oh...to have such memories...

*thinks about it*

I don't have much memories of my parents come to think about it. I'm happy that you've had such an enjoyable life with your parents. It's a precious thing to have.

it was in the Days of the Great Daily Dialogue we had going, when we both had more time.

Sighs in fond memory of better letter-writing days

Ha-ha! Great! Even better, because I *love* 'Favourite Things' ... at least I'm pretty sure you're referring to the Hip Hop track... I hope... regardless, I'll have to listen to it while I read this again, perhaps to get the full effect? I'm sure my brain can multi-task enough...

^.^

(Edit: Okay, maybe my brain *can't* multi-task enough... *chuckles*)
