Canid Posted October 24, 2002 Report Posted October 24, 2002 (edited) Alas I have eaten too much. I sit curled up in the chair of a friend's household and with acid bubbling in my stomach and am filled with a profound need to write something. I suppose the most appropriate thing would be an account of my travels, as I have for some time been wanting to record that. The trick would be in making it readable to anyone other than myself. A person's life is rarely so suspenseful as to make a good book and my adventures are long enough as to be no exception. I grew up in a wolf-pack in mid-early years of one of the lives of Terra. I knew of my talents early, the first signs showing in getting fleeting glimpses of my parents and siblings thoughts. This quickly grew into intact, intelligible language, which shortly after-which I found myself able to manipulate. I was not shunned by my family, as many magic-wielders have been out of fear or simple misunderstanding. My ability to see thoughts removed a basic level of communication that most experience, thus I learned much faster than the other puppies in my litter and in pursuit of knowledge, set off on my own for longer periods of time than other young wolves could. I learned that my skills applied to other creatures than wolves, that I could heal and grow things and increase my strength and coordination by applying my magic in different ways. These were my beginnings, so I shall skip ahead a few months - which is a long time for a wolf - to my introduction to the mystical birds, whose name I hold. Canid Posted October 27, 2002 Author Report Posted October 27, 2002 (edited) While I was growing up, it was a custom of many wolf packs to befriend a magical creature that would give them some warning and protection against magical threats. Phoenix, often hunters themselves and with a closeness to the earthy world were frequently those who would enter into these arrangements. Later on, when wars between powerful mages became common, the tradition came to an end due to the lack of such creatures. My pack had been adopted in such a manner by a phoenix named Thazel. Thazel was a surprise in every way to my siblings, but her presence was not unknown to me. The wolves missed her when she went on her journeys and the beautiful fire and gold of her plumage would dance through the minds of the lower ranking wolves often left to watch us. Her knowledge was relived in the minds of the alpha wolves and respect for our pack phoenix was possessed by all. Naturally I made it my business to learn of phoenix from all my sources before Thazel returned from the journey she had taken during the first few months of my life. I knew a couple mages at that point, my best bet seemed with the verdant mage Collsis, as phoenix will only associate themselves with verdants in most cases. I padded my way into his town. It was a small affair; jumbled and disorganized rather like Collsis' mind. Entering his modest home, I was greeted with the normal array of thoughts: mainly theories about enemies that were never true. I closed the door to get his attention. Collsis started. "Ah, hello Canid. Haven't heard anything from across the forest? If that fire-fellow is in contact with those things again, I'll be in for a dunk." He scratched at his head. "You were the last word I heard on him," I replied, "and in the week it has been since then, I doubt he will have rebuilt his entire town. Have you eaten?" I knew the answer perfectly well; he didn't smell of food, therefore he had not had a bite for at least a day. "I thought you were still fed by your parents, you shouldn't be begging from me." he said, standing up to look in a small chest. "I am not here for a meal." I replied, smiling slightly as he came out with a heavy pie and some fancy fruits. "Oh." Collsis looked over the food he had brought out and put it on the table, digging into it with a shrug. "What do you know about phoenix?" Collsis jumped. "The Verdant guild aren't in arms about fees again? I barely have enough to keep this mess going without them setting their hawks on me!" "Actually the Verdant guild will be considering your town for one of it's charitable donations next week, but I wasn't referring to any specific group of phoenix in my inquires." "How old are you again?" "A bit over three months." Collsis gave me a grinning overwhelmed expression and confused statements about developing language projected themselves through his thoughts. "I still can't believe you learned English at all...." he mumbled brushing his hair with his hand and stuffing a chunk of potato into his mouth. I left a couple hours later with Collsis' opinion that I wouldn't like phoenix and that they could change sizes remarkably fast and were fabulous at spying on people. Also, and I don't know how he learned this, that they could live through armageddon, the fabled end to each life of Terra. Thazel lived up to Collsis' words.
