The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

I saw you stripped bare,

Slowly destroyed, emotionally beaten,

Yet you stayed, knowing you once lived,

But now caged by fears placed so subtly,

So expertly positioned in your mind,

So you wouldn't see the game, till it was too late.

Ever I have seen you so open to believe the bad,

You dismissed my words at times, ignored,

All I spoke was true, how amazing, how beautiful,

You once said you were starting to see,

But my words are less than memory, not even echoing,

Leaving you alone to this false reality.

So tightly woven in lies you hide, trapped by words not your own,

Grooming fears deep inside, forcing you to deal alone,

When all you needed to do was hear,

The voice I wish I had, telling you I am always there,

To show you the beauty you always have,

How to open your cage, and destroy this trap.

.........

You should not be compared to someone like that,

There is no truth to these lies,

You always were better, much more besides,

So to listen and obey, those hollow words said,

You are not as he makes you believe,

Don't let him do to you, all those things he did.

How many times have you fought against,

Those that tried to change you, and how you think?

Why do you now listen, no hesitation, no blink?

Why do you believe his lies, those words of pain?

Now you hide, coiled inside, believing this misplaced shame.

I pray you see, eyes opened again,

Watch for this subtle trap,

Watch the weaving around you,

The lies behind your back,

Keep making yourself remind you,

There is no power that you lack.

.........

Good poem, cryptomancer. :-) For something that's "making sense of a dream," the subject of this poem certainly rings true to life. I can definitely identify with a number of the emotions and depictions of verbal abuse detailed in this piece, and I like how you use the fifth and sixth stanzas to reaffirm the subject of the poem's power and beauty. If this poem's written for a certain special person, I hope that said person reads it and that it helps them with their struggle.

Nice poem once again, cryptomancer. Thanks for sharing it here.

The poem opens with a very powerful imagary that draws the reader in. The poem is indeed very emotional and strong, especially with the way the poem itself is structured; short meters and stress in key wordings making this work very powerful when recited. It's definately a good read.
