The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Ah, FARS. Had but one experience in that place, but I still miss it. :>)

I loved the language used in this one - you made it sound like a tour guide/ local guide for hire was telling the story; it was as natural as a reader could ask for.

One question, though. This line tripped me up: "The great Merchant ships eventually fell into disuse, excerbated by the loss of the dockworker who'd carried the ships ashore for maintenance."

Who or what the heck was this dockworker? A single worker carrying ships ashore? Was he a giant? Wizard? Giant wizard? What???

His name was "Five". And he did indeed carry the ships ashore. If you recall Yrrana, there was a possibility of player characters having an "innate power". In the pursuit of justice, non-player characters had a possibility as well, just not as likely.

Five's innate power I'll not define, but it enabled him to wade into the waters, get a firm grasp on a ship, and carry it into the dry-dock frame. It has always seemed pointless to me to have a power that didn't allow for the entire package - for example, if a power were strength, by implication it should increase the constitution to avoid damaging the spine from the object lifted. Innate powers were a method of evolutionary competition - it answered the FARS question: given the presence of an enormous source of power in the environment, in what manners would the environment adapt to use said source?

Oh, no, it wasn't a Giant, that's a specific race. He *was* at the extreme of the Yrranan human norm, however, in so much as he was 90 inches tall, and weighed approximately 375 pounds.

There is an instance of a Ribbon Dancer of Wreave taking offense at being jostled by Five, and attacking him. The fight lasted until Five connected with a partial blow; the Dancer was last seen somewhere over the bay. If you've seen it, think Sin City's fight between Marv and the Frodo-fellow with lemur eyes, whatever his name is.
