The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

The people have spoken, and the permanent description for the Cloak of Dreams is now as follows:

Perhaps it was sewn by a witch, every thread carefully given a place in the spell before being stitched into the garment. Or perhaps it did long service as a regular cloak before being enchanted. Perhaps the magic was done as a curse of some sort, the perpetrator cackling to themselves about how long before the victim figured out the cause of their strange dreams. Perhaps it was a gift for a helpful friend. Perhaps only a way to make some money in hard times. The sad truth is, no one knows the history of the Cloak of Dreams. But what we do know is plenty enough to make it interesting.

Imagine, if you will, falling asleep in the warm encompassing arms of the thick black cloak. It almost lulls you to sleep, but the sleep is not restful, for that is not the purpose. Instead, you will find yourself in an infinite expanse. At first, it will seem like nothingness, but if you concentrate on the darkness you will begin to notice shapes. Friends, enemies, aquaintances of all kinds. Some consider it a downfall of the cloak that you may only approach those that you have seen in person, but consider the sheer number of people in the world, and the impossibility of finding anyone if everyone were truly represented in this dreamworld. Now, the definition is somewhat loose, and though study has gone into the exact extent of familiarity required for representation, it doesn't seem to be always the same, never mind clearly defined. If you know someone's name, or see them often, or are aware of them as a friend of a friend - if they take up a portion of your conciousness, it seems, they most likely are represented here. But not, and this is important, if they are not asleep.

As you float amongst ghostlike images of these people, you can catch glimpses of their dreams. But this is not the extent of the cloak's powers. If you select one of them, and lay yourself into their misty form, you can enter their dreams. An inexperienced dreamwalker will appear as themselves, and perhaps do no more than observe. Or, perhaps appear as the dreamer happens to be dreaming them. This can be rather disconcerting at first, because dreams may be colour or black and white; they may be a long story or flash around in short sequences; they may be three dimensions or two; consist of normal people or play-dough figurines, cartoons, cloth dolls, video-game representations of friends, et cetera; or be nearly anything at all. There is no danger in the dreamworld, but confusion and embarassment are not uncommon. Nevertheless, as your experience grows, you will find that you can influence the shape and character of the dream. You can play any of the characters, sometimes even the dreamer if they are not seeing it from a first-person perspective. You can send a warning - a vague apprehension of something upon waking - or a clearer message for anyone prepared to see it. You can tip someone toward entering the day in a jolly mood, or a sad mood, or a fearful mood. You could steer them toward liking or disliking you or another person just a little bit. The possibilities of the cloak are really only capped by your own ambition. Or, in another sense, your dreams.

But the owner is as yet undecided! Now is your chance. Open auction to commence... now.

OOC: This really is the Summer, huh? No one around or something here. I didn't want to be the first to bid, but if no one's gonna bid, I will be.

IC:

Inbi Infusco wanders into the auction chamber and sees Katzaniel hawking the cloak. Her eyes go wide. "A cloak... that lets its wearer see people's dreams. Cool!" She opens her pouch and shuffles things around a bit before pulling out some geld and counting it. "Wow," she mutters, "I might even be able to afford this."

"50 geld on the Cloak of Dreams, please."
