Patrick Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 I, Amund Scottsen, shivered in my tent. The north pole is an unforgiving place and I'd forgotten to bring enough vitamine C, or rather fruit and vegetables. Skorbut is a formidable opponent and even more formidable when fought in the Arctic regions around the North Pole. I had radioed for help two hours ago, and it should be on its way. Jonathan Lestrowe had packed. He had three refridgerators, two of them filled and one empty one, his tent, warm clothes, a shovel, and various other items he thought he'd need. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - he'd always wanted to try and sell fridges on the north pole but the transportation costs just hadn't seemed worth the risk. But now he'd been offered transportation in exchange for a fridge full of fruit, so he was going to give it a try. It didn't take long for his items to be loaded into a helicopter and before he knew it he could see the polar icecap and it was a wonderful sight indeed. A wisp of smoke rose from a pile of snow. A fish jumped through a hole in the ice. A tent got covered by an avalanche. Wait ... that wasn't right! I suddenly heard a helicopter arriving. With my hopes rising I shakily stood up and went to the exit of my tent and peeked out. I saw the helicopter moving closer, and was just in time to retreat into my tent as the avalanche hit it. As soon as the helicopter had landed Jonathan jumped out and went to work with his shovel. It wasn't long before I could see a grinning face poking in through the opening of my tent Before even introducing himself I looked at my savior with begging eyes. "You have any vitamine C?" "Vitamine C? Of course I do! I brought you a whole fridge full of it, nice, juicy lemons, oranges, the tastiest fruits you can imagine! And what's even better, it's already been paid for!" The relief must've been visible on my face. "Thank God!" We then walked over to the helicopter and opened the fridge. "What's that slug doing in there?" Jonathan's eyes opened wide with amazement. Indeed, he, too, saw it now. A slug was clambering inside our refridgerator. "Doesn't really matter" - I said and grabbed a juicy banana from the fridge. I was just about to start peeling it when I saw the slug's gaze fixed at a point behind him. I spun around and stared straight at a menacing-looking polar bear. Thinking quickly, I grabbed some fruit and the slug (who had, after all, warned me) and yelled to Jonathan to run for the helicopter. We barely made it in time and with a lot of wind lifted off to head back home. Two years later: "I, Alfred, king of Sweden hereby present Arcty, this here slug with the award of bravery for having saved the lives of Amund Scotsen and Jonathan Lestrowe."
