Sweetcherrie Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 There are three Dutch speakers on this site (Appy, Venefyxatu, and I, (as far as I know) and we are starting to mix up our languages. When speaking together you will find phrases half written in English and half in Dutch, even some German influences can be found. Slowly we are being Englitised, and have even invented some new words that will probably only exist in the new Dutch Pen dictionary. The idea of putting this in some sort of game came into being, and I will hereby invite you to play the game 'Spread the Word' You take an English expression and turn this into your own language, or your second language, and then turn it back into a definition of the English and the 'Other language' definition. Difficult? Well, below you can find the example: I Proudly present the newest word in the Dutch Pen dictionary. Knikpitten. This is the new Dutch word for nitpicking It was born into this world in the dark of the night, and adopted by its proud parents short after. We hope it will be cherished, loved, and accepted throughout the pen. This word can be explained as follows: Knik: means nodding or it can also be folded double Pitten: is the core of a fruit, or sleeping. The full definition will be: Knikpit: noun An agreeable though sleepy core of a fruit that is thrown to people when the thrower wants to point out insignificant little mistakes somewhere. The receiver will then be folded in half because of the force with which the knikpit is thrown. Knikpitten: verb The act of throwing one or more Knikpit. By all means this word can be used freely, we even encourage the use of this word. With thanks to Appy and Venefyxatu, who were essential to starting this little language game. *hugs her Dutch speaking buddies* - Sweetcherrie Quote
Katzaniel Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 (edited) Can we include words that were just garbled around in English? Like my favourite, "conformulist". Conformist: Someone who follows others. Formula: A mathematical equation. Conformulist: noun Someone who, rather than understanding the physical laws that are behind a formula, tries to get through by memorizing the equation and applying it willy-nilly. If that's not allowed, you can just ignore me. Edited March 7, 2005 by Katzaniel Quote
Sweetcherrie Posted March 7, 2005 Author Report Posted March 7, 2005 LOL Yeah, why not? Jut be carefull to not make it a "redefinition". Come to think of it, this probably makes it a bit more accesible. Hey, we might even be able to start a Pen Dictionary I've always wondered what my skills in maths were so now there's a word for it, I'm a "conformulist" And I wouldn't ignore you even if they paid me! (although it might depend on the amount ) *Loves you really* - Sweetcherrie Quote
Venefyxatu Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 Yay! I'm a conformulist as well! But getting paid to ignore somebody, now that's an interesting thought ... I could become rich from that if I handled things the right way. *ponders* Salary : The money you get for doing a job Ignore : Pretending as if someone (or something) isn't there. Pay : Giving someone money (or goods) to get him (or her) to do something for you. Salorary : noun The money you get for pretending someone (or something) isn't there Panore : verb Pay someone to ignore someone else for you. Of course, the money you give them is called their salorary. Like this? And then there's this joke we have here. Kleptomaniac : Someone who has an irresistable urge to steal things Pyromaniac : Someone who has an irresistable urge to set things on fire Masochist : Someone who enjoys hurting himself (or herself), or getting hurt. Cleptopyromasochistiac : noun Someone who has an irresistable urge to set himself (or herself) on fire with stolen matches. Quote
