Quiet Fury. (06 FEB 2005)

Three Stripes and a Rocker

A Function of Time?

Or simply a function of a motivated mind…

At the Cracker Barrel, the class of seven sits.

Inclined by tradition:

To defer to the callowness of the leader imposed upon them.

Prolonging the mandatory morning meal

The class engages in the usual conversations:

“What’s it’s really like over there?”

“…this Sand isn’t like anything we’ve ever faced”

“I heard he’s getting out ya know…”

“Sigh, my kids are growing up without me…”

“Lot’s of jobs on the outside, I hear…”

“We’re hanging on by thread; it’s been two years since we’ve been together…”

As the coffee stream is steadily drained, the mood lightens…

Though graduation is still too far away for some.

Talk of background and personal histories spring up.

Through the ebb and flow…

The Sergeant with the blood of Siam recalls a family tradition...

Struck by mirth-

Smirking, the infant among them brings all talk to a halt.

Chiding, “You really need to stop saying Bangkok…I can’t stand it”

Ostracized by the stain of unsuppressed laughter…

The Sergeant becomes an object of ignorant ridicule…

Indeed, graduation is too far away.

so get ready to be ridiculed and misunderstood." (aimee mann)

FYI:

I workshopped the heck out this poem last spring and it was reborn as Rank a.k.a Assignment 17 in the Writer's Workshop.
