Regel Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 As a prefix to this post I am happy to say that dirt was still fairly new when I was born. Some of the references are likely out of the United States but I still recall a great many of them. I can still recall horse drawn MilkWagons from Silverwoods Dairy and the road apples the horses left on the street. For those of you too young ask your mom and dad or better still your Grandparents. MEMORIES from a friend: My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to "sprinkle" clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old How many do you remember? Head lights dimmer switches on the floor. Ignition switches on the dashboard. Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall. Real ice boxes. Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner. Using hand signals for cars without turn signals. Older Than Dirt Quiz: Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about Ratings at the bottom. 1. Blackjack chewing gum 2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water 3. Candy cigarettes 4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles 5. Coffee shops or diners with tableside juke boxes 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers 7. Party lines 8. Newsreels before the movie 9. P.F. Flyers 10. Butch wax 11. Telephone numbers with a word prefix (OLive-6933) 12. Peashooters 13. Howdy Doody 14. 45 RPM records 15. S&H Green Stamps 16 Hi-fi's 17. I might be older than dirt but those memories are the best part of my life. Don't forget to pass this along!! Especially to all your really OLD friends.... ===== "Senility Prayer"...God grant me... The senility to forget the people I never liked The good fortune to run into the ones that I do And the eyesight to tell the difference." Have a great week!!!!!!
Quincunx Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I saw #2 & #3 while I was visiting Starlight's family for Christmas. He didn't understand why I was so interested, or the appeal of a wax cola bottle. Does a Stewart's drive-in with ice cream and root beer floats count for #23? It didn't specify "movie theater".

Regel Posted January 27, 2005 Author Report Posted January 27, 2005 Zool Butch Wax was how you spiked your hair to create the fifties hairstyle known as a Flat Top. The 1950's version of mousse! :lol
WrenWind Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 22 guess i'm older than dirt too. Watched Howdy Doody on a little black and white TV ..we were the only house with a tv on the street for a long time and when colour TV's came out my Dad got one right away. Every saturday night his friends would come over to watch hockey. *smiles* Who remembers Mr. Greenjeans?
Peredhil Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Waves his hand. I remember Mr. Greenjeans. The Good Captain K. with his little train...
The Portrait of Zool Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 It seems only a few years ago I remember reading of the good Captain's death. It was saddening, though I suppose he lived a full and long life - and brought back memories of when we only had three channels to watch!
Sweetcherrie Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 I feel so ickle here, I only know candy cigarettes and even for that memory I had to dig deep. Guess in a few more years, we'll be writing down things like: Do you remember those mobile phones, the size of a fridge, without camera, and can't imagine what that must have been like books, and you say they had stories in it, without pictures?. I for one sure hope that the latter is never going to happen, but then people seem to find it more difficult to read a normal book everyday. Sweetcherrie
Peredhil Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Hobbles over and after a few tries, manages to lift his feeble old arms high enough to give Sweet Cherrie a reassuring hug. You are doing just fine, Missy! Why, when I was young, we wished we had books without pictures. Why we had it so rough... Wanders off into a rambling nostalgic reminiscing. Oh. Heh, heh, heh. Anyway. Your time will come soon enough!
Regel Posted January 31, 2005 Author Report Posted January 31, 2005 Under the headings "Things I never had when I was a kid." 1. Hairdryer - Apparently towels were the way you dried your hair. 2.Microwave- Science fiction of the sixties. 3. Game systems like Xbox PS2 etc. - Board games and table hockey instead. 4. Computers/Internet- books 5. Cable Television: Rabbit ears and prayed for clear skies. 6. Instant anything: Food took time to prepare and meals were family time.
Gwaihir Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 Does it say something that I don't have any of those six things and even if I were rich as Croesus would only get the microwave?
Gryphon Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 Gwai... you don't have a computer? Or a microwave? How do you live? (For that matter how do you get on here to post?) Mynx was kind enough to leave me her PS2 while she went over to visit the sights in USA. That's an instant recipe for far far too many late nights for me.
Sweetcherrie Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) Ooh...ooh... yes, these I do know! :woot: 1. used to have a hairdryer, (but something went wrong when I used it in the shower, and now it blows up every single fuse in the house) 2. used to have a microwave, (but when I moved, I left it behind) 3. used to have a sega 16 bit (does this count?) 4. Yes, I do have a computer with internet 5. My parents have Cable television (So everytime I'm at their place they have to almost kick me of the sofa away from the tv) 6. Since I don't have a microwave anymore, instant meals are also a used to. Hmm... reading this over again makes me feel like a have-been -Sweetcherrie Edited February 1, 2005 by Sweetcherrie
