~Brief Description~

 

Tanny is from a race of shapechangers, who live far and hidden from humans. Unlike most of the werefolk, she has the rare ability of changing into two alternate forms: a tanuki (Japanese racoon-dog) and a wolf. She is usually very reticent about her people and where she came from, not wanting to reveal too much about a people who had been hunted for centuries due to their misunderstood shapechanging inheritance. "No, we are not like werewolves, we do not infect people, we do not kill in a frenzy for blood..." she would mutter in answer to some curious questioning. "We just have two natures, and we are true to both of them. We are very much any other folk you know.... except for the abitlity to use alternate animal form."

 

She can be found easily around the Pen Keep, keeping a room there though she has also a cozy cottage somewhere in the forest.

~Abilities~

 

Tanny can easily sense magic and the channeling of energies.

 

She can change shapes at any time, being also able to hold the changing in a hybrid form for a short period of time (though this will drain her). Anything she wears is automatically taken in shapechanging.

 

In fighting, she'll almost always favor the wolf form, although she can use a sword to defend herself and is skilled with knives, daggers, and bow. She has a natural resistance against wounds, healing easily and quickly in most cases. However, silver weapons deal damage that heals slowly and painfully.

 

As wolf or tanuki, she's able to communicate with her kin. She's also able to mind-speak while in these forms, though most common humans are unable to understand her.

 

Mind-speech*: Tanny's able to speak mind-to-mind though the degree of understanding would depend on the nature and skill of the one being mindspoken to. Communication with non-natural mindspeakers is easier as a wolf, since the skill is naturally stronger in that form. In human form, mind-speaking is facilitated by the existence of friendship/trust ties. Mind-speech is different from telepathy, since thoughts cannot be read directly.

MAGIC DRESS: a gift from Peredhil by occasion of the Bachelor Auction date; it changes to whatever garment is appropriate for the shape/occasion she's in.

As she reflexively changed into her protective wolf-form, she caught a glimpse of a flowing high-bodiced gown. Looking back at herself in the mirror, she saw she wore a light large-linked silver chain around her neck, the eye of each link containing a dark opal.

Changing to Tanuki shape, she wore the sacred Lotus leaf on her head. Eyes narrowing, she changed back to human-form – and wore a flowing dress which adapted smoothly to every movement, revealing beauty but concealing modesty, flattering without being ostentatious.

FOCUS JEWEL: a gift from Gryphon by occasion of his Quill Quest; it helps focusing earth energy as Tanny channels it, also adapting to the shape she's in.

It is a strange looking gemstone set in silver. Half the stone is the clearest amber that glows gently in the morning sunlight while the other half is a pale blue clear gem shot through with silver. Where the two colours meet there is a vortex shaped swirl that seems to lead from the base of the stone to the top without causing a flaw in the gem it's self.

Moments later the silver is crawling up Tanny's arm, extending tendrils of its substance to simulate legs. Suprise flashes across her face as the stone makes its way to her neck and settles there like a pendant on a thin silver necklace.

TIARA OF WATERY PORTAL: bought from Achib El Assis Ibn Moussif El Rasjid at the Summer '05 Carnival, it teleports its wearer to the nearest body of water as soon as wood (in any form) is touched. It will instantly dry the wearer when they step out of water, until the time it gets soaked up; then all the accumulated water is dumped back onto the wearer.

As she examined the articles spread all around her, her eyes rested on a delicate tiara made of some silvery material set with tiny light-green stones. With a smile, she picked it, and noticed how it glinted even in the subsided light of Achib's tent. Carefully, she probed it with a tendril of earth energy, sensing then a faint touch of water.

FAERY LANTERN: a gift from Azuran when he applied to the Pen, it's a tiny magical lantern that emits an inextinguishable bright green light.

The small device looked innocently like a simple paper clip, the inner part of which had been bent at a ninety degree angle from the rest. Leaning closer, however, Tanny noticed a tiny bead of glass held in the tight arc of metal, held straight up in the air only a centimeter or so above Azuran's palm. His eyes lit up with anticipation as he carefully squeezed the tiny glass orb with the thumb and forefinger of his other hand, quickly drawing back immediately afterwards. (...) Slowly, however, the bead began to glow a very soft green, rapidly growing in intensity until it finally seemed to settle on a brilliant deep jade.

WEAPONS: when adventuring, she carries with her a bow and several throwing knives. She avoids carrying weapons that can hamper her quick movement.

~Physical Description~

 

In human shape, she is about 1.65m tall, has light-grey eyes and long raven-black hair. Apparently in her late twenties, she's about 100 years old, the average life spam of her shapechanger kin being nearly 500 years. Surprisingly agile and quick, she is also stronger than one would expect.

 

In her favored wolf-shape, she has grey eyes and raven-black fur, being a medium-sized wolf. She's often seen around the Pen in this form, using the keen senses of a wolf to discover and explore the many rooms of the Keep.

 

In her minor tanuki shape, she keeps the characteristic markings and size of a medium, grey-eyed tanuki.

~Personality~

 

She is quiet and shy around unknown people/places, prefering to observe and listen before talking. Depending on her mood, she can show also the suspicious and careful nature of her wolf-counterpart. To her friends she reveals a playful and friendly personality, though strong and quite fierce. Don't ever make her angry, for the claws and teeth of a wolf are revealed in her words and attitudes also.

~Relationships~

Tanny has made some good friends since coming to the Pen.

Merelas has become a good friend after their partnering in some activities at the Conservatory; at the Summer Solstice Carnival, she won a date with him.

Stephen Hascodem* is a very good friend and adventuring partner, having been her partner in an AVV assignment during the Winter Solstice Carnival. Due to his link to earth and a wyvern figurine she has made and given him, he's so far the only person who can actually fully mindspeak to her in any of her forms, including human.

Leif the Bunny is a friend met somewhere else, when adventuring brought them together by chance. To this day they visit from time to time, and occasionaly adventure calls them to the same place.

Mynx is her closest and best friend.

Although she has a room somewhere in the Keep, she often spends her time outside, roaming the Pen and its surrounding area. The forest nearby is one of her favorite places to rest, and she keeps a cozy cottage somewhere in it. She is also a frequent sight in both the Conservatory and the Banquet Room.

Sometimes she weaves her magic into items given to friends. Thus, she has given items to:

Ayshela (boots and brooch)

"There is a pair of soft but sturdy leather boots. I wove earth energy into them; your footsteps will be inaudible when on bare earth, and the endurance given by earth will flow into you in times of need. They'll still work on pavement, but the deeper, or farther, true earth is, the weaker will be their effect.

"It will always remind you of a cool morning breeze, soothing and calming; and when you're feeling lonely or in need of support, it will also bring the love from every person whose heart you have touched. For that is the meaning of the weaving inside the flowers."

Merelas (jewel)

"This jewel has the energies of earth and water interwoven in its structure... strength, healing, protection, cleansing. And now it's keyed to you. Whenever you feel weary, bend your mind into it. It will help you." Smiling at Merelas, she continues, "The wearier you are, the stronger the effect will be. It can't heal you physically as Chrissiania's Jewel does, or give you the same kind of skill. But it will strengthen your mind and give it what protection it can."

Stephem Hascodem (wyvern sculpture).

"I've woven your pattern into the wooden threads, reinforcing it with a good measure of earth. It will help you to focus your mind in the right level for mindspeaking with any creature who has any link with earth. And my pattern is there also, so we'll be able to mindspeak even when you aren't linked to earth."

Lord Panther (robe, crystal dragon)

Flowing runes grace the hem, embroidered by a careful hand in deep red and gold threads. The hood is ample, enough to hide the face if the wearer so wishes but made in a way to not hinder sight. The sleeves can be strapped high to allow free movement or let loose to hide the hands. For a knowing eye, it glimmers with the energy woven in it - earth for steadiness and strength, water for comfort and protection. As an added bonus, the same water threads woven in the robe allow it to remain dry even under the heaviest of rains.

She concentrates on the crystal in her hands, and little by little the tiny facets grow brighter, smoother. The delicate threads of energy that run through the crystals are not easy for her to manipulate, in spite of being of earth in nature, but her patience and care show the results she had planned some time later. In her hands, there is now a small crystal dragon that glows golden-red, sunrays trapped and reflected in the myriad facets that make its scales.

"I shaped it using the earth threads that are part of its nature, and it is laced with water. You're a mage, so you will be able to bend your will into it - it'll warm your heart and give your mind the strength and healing of earth if you need it, and soothe and comfort through the water threads. I know they aren't your elements, fire-mage, but I hope that you accept this from a friend's heart."

This is a chronology of Tanny's story as told through the several threads at The Pen. Some stories are unfinished (but with plans to be finished... at some time), and others were not posted in the chronological order of events - as many happened during Carnival activities that were written before one given story was finished.
