Falcon2001 Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 (edited) Okay I'm sure everyone here has heard of the freeipods.com thing or seen an ad for it. As far as I can tell, here's how it works. 1: Sign up at the site, or use a referral thing to sign up. 2: Sign up for some offer 3: Get 5 people to do the same 4: Get an iPod Now of course the first thing that comes to mind with this is that it's a hoax, and there's no possible way that it works correctly - also I didn't want to get stuck into a dumb AOL offer or something. According to the things I've seen, basically the company gets paid for referring people to these corporations, and most people don't make it to five referrals that sign up as well, therefore they earn money. Now I figure, if someone could find some proof that this is a huge hoax, that'd be great, but thus far I've seen at least 10 different photo galleries of people that have recieved an iPod or mini iPod or something. I'm not sure, just wanted to see if anyone could dig up some dirt on this, 'cause I'm still not sure whether I want to go through with the whole thing and start begging for referrals. There's a similar program, affiliated with the iPods thing that works for flatscreens, too. Either way if you decide that you're actually going to try to go through with it, contact me. Thanks, everyone. I'd love to have some evidence either way on this. Edited after sleeping and resetting. Edited August 20, 2004 by Falcon2001
Quincunx Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 (edited) Falcon, you've been here for awhile, really you should know better, now root those linkies out of your post! --Tzimfemme, the naked Feeling clement enough not to nuke the post entirely. Or lazy. Edited August 20, 2004 by Quincunx
Quincunx Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Alright, fair enough, I'll add the only anecdotal evidence I have--an article in an online, Great Britain-based newspaper about a "Free IPod" offer resulting in enormous backlogs (>60,000 desired vs. 10,000 supply). That had run as an advertisment in a newspaper, clip the coupon and send it in, most unlike your proposal.
Salinye Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Random email... I got an email that reminded me of this thread. It was typical spam and had the whole "GET A FREE IPOD Click here!" type of thing. So I clicked there, and here and there again. Anywhere on the email that there was a link to go to get the information on how to get a free ipod came up with a screen that simply said "Service not available." Food for thought. ~Salinye
