Salinye runs in throwing her arms around her partner in crime in a hug before she can protest. She then hands the huntress a rolled up greyish black flimsy material that is tied with a bow. "Here, Yui-Sama. This is for you."

Yui blushes slightly while untying the ribbon. "Thank you, Sali-Chan. Errr...." She unrolls the gift revealing a large filmy peice of cloth and tries to decide what it is without looking like she doesn't know-not wanting to hurt Salinye's feelings.

Salinye smiles knowing the gift is odd. "It's a blanket."

Yui inspects the organdy-type material and thinks it doesn't look much like a blanket but smiles.

"Oh, see, it's a peice of solidified shadow. Something I've been working on." She then leaned forward and whispered so only Yui could hear her. "I thought it might bring some comfort to some of those bad dreams." She then smiled proudly at her handi-work and stepped aside so as not to hog the time of the guest of honor. She knew that later, upon closer inspection, Yui would find the material quite unique.

Well, the birthday shockwave still hasn't passed here, but...

Lady of Shadows,

Of darkly dancing mishief,

And grinning wonder.

Happy birthday, oh Yui-ness!

Whoa, Yui's birthday!

Congrats... but that's not quite in order, is it?

Have a good one... unless it's already over, there?

Well, whatever. If you want a gift, have my shadow. Or doesn't it work that way?

Perhaps I'll settle with "Merry Christmas!"

although it yet be somewhat early

the sun never truly rises or sets in the depths of the shadows

so perhaps one day is as good as the next?

and yet there truly is no day quite like

the wonderful anniversary of birth

of the ever-eloquent elegant Yui.

May there be sun on your face

May there be shadows to melt into

and may you always find beloved friends at your side.

*warm hugs and best wishes*

Once the day began to wind down, and well-wishers finally stopped coming, Yui slipped off into the lengthening shade to take her daily walk (and make daily rounds).

Eyes flickering ever back and forth from dark to light, she caught something else nearby, moving through the deeper shadows...out of the places where shadows live that light never reaches.

Knowing all too well the things that call that realm home, Yui stepped closer to the light (where most such things were blind) and tensed for fight or flight.

It was, much as she had feared, a Shadow Monster- one of the oldest denizens of Terra lost that had followed archmage masters to the lands of The Pen is Mightier than the Sword, like other Terran creatures, much more powerful in their new even richer in magic home, as well as being a barely controlled force, even under the most powerful of wizards, for their minds were simply too alien.

The strange thing was, it was alone. For as long as Yui had known of the creatures it was unheard of that one would be found with neither a pack of its' brethren, nor an archmage master. The huntress readied herself for anything.

What she remained unprepared for, however, was upon its methodic closing of the distance, the receiving of a bouquet of Moon Flowers from its ethereal arms. Her eyes widened in surprise as the Shadow Monster up this historic non sequitur with yet another; with a stiff bow that rather mimicked a folding piece of cloth, it departed back into the deep dark.

Standing there still in the waning light, examining her gift in wonder, the white and red blossoms finished their nightly bloom before Yui's eyes. These were very fresh.

She quickly noticed a small note tied around the flowers with a bit of string.

Untying the paper, she read:

Dear Yui,

Many Happy Returns of the day!

Sincerely,

...all that followed underneath the close was a swatch of blue watercolor paint.

Wyvern rapidly searches through his Office for a gift for Yui's birthday, discarding several torn magazine foldouts and tax notifications as he rummages through an enormous pile of paperwork at the center of the room. The overgrown lizard grumbles to himself when he finds only a long-lost chocolate bar and a colony of ants at the bottom of the pile, and casts a glance towards the grandfather clock at the corner of the room before whining to himself:

"Shoot... well, I guess I can always try oragami as a last resort."

The reptilian Elder turns to the pile of papers and winces, recalling the number of papercuts he had ended up with when scheming to create Almost Dragonic Brand Handmade Oragami Sculptures™. The lizard slowly approaches the pile and hesitantly picks up a brochure that advertises 0.5 coppers off of a Celes Crusador sandwich with a purchase of 400 geld or more. He hesitantly fiddles with the catalogue and attempts to fold it, but finds himself unable to do so as the thought of creasing a potential money-saver is too much for him to handle. Sighing and dropping the catalogue, the reptilian Elder is about to give up hope when he suddenly notices an unfamiliar-looking book sitting on Melba's empty desktop.

"Hmmm..." hisses Wyvern to himself, glancing left and right to make sure that Melba's not around before gradually tiptoeing towards her desk. "What'ssss this? A book on Dragonology?"

Wyvern curiously examines the cover of the book, which reads "Dragonology" and is bound in red with a picture of a flying dragon on the cover. Opening the book and noticing that Melba has bookmarked the pages on "The Weaknesses of Wyverns," the overgrown scratches his scaly chin before sinisterly grinning to himself and hissing:

"Well, I certainly can't let Melba have this, and I'm sure Yui wouldn't mind it for occasional referencing. Two birds with one stone!"

With that, Wyvern gleefully tears out a piece of paper attached to the back of the front cover that reads "Propertly of Melba," and crosses the words out before quickly scrawling a birthday note to Yui in his almost dragonic handwriting. The lizard then lets out a gale of evil laughter and grabs the book from the desk, racing off to join the others that have gathered to wish Yui a happy birthday and give her his newly found gift.

OOC: Hope you have a wonderful birthday, Yui-chan. :)

Yui-chan stepped out of the shadows into her favorite garden, holding the bouquet of Moon Flowers and Ozymandias’ letter in her hands. She paused a moment to close her eyes and inhale the pleasing fragrance of the flowers. Which is why she didn’t notice the presence of others until a quiet “Yerf.” caused her to open her eyes.

Yui-chan blinked several times as she lowered the Moon Flowers to stare at the two foxes in front of her. The two foxes stared back until one of them helpfully wagged her five tails, and Yui-chan smiled. “I see you brought your lady friend, Daryl.” she said, bowing slightly to the kitsune. “Hello, Jehane-san.” Yui-chan said with a friendly smile.

The kitsune yerfed a greeting in return and gestured to Daryl as they pushed two wrapped objects, one a bundle wrapped in colorful wrapping paper, the other a long, thin object carefully wrapped in muted cloth.

Yui-chan smiled as she knelt down to bestow pats and ear scratches on both foxes. “You didn’t have to bring me presents.” she chided Daryl, who merely yerfed and grinned a foxy grin in response before nosing the bundle closer to Yui-chan. With a laugh, she sat and set the Moon Flowers aside to carefully open the bundle first. Inside was a patch of darkness which Yui-chan lifted and shook out to reveal that it was a black cloak that seemed to blend into the nearest shadows. She smiled as she inspected it. “It’s wonderful, Daryl.” she said warmly, impressed by the fine weave of the cloth.

Daryl grinned widely and yerfed and yipped for several minutes, explaining that the inside of the cloak also had many pockets and flaps for her to store all the essentials – snacks, a water bottle, pen, ink, paper, a sketchpad and all the necessary tools. Yui-chan smiled and rubbed behind his ears when he finished. “Thank you very much Daryl.” she said, smiling also when Daryl said that Gyrfalcon had helped in acquiring the cloak.

She turned her attention to Jehane, who yipped a simple ‘Happy Birthday!’ as Yui-chan unwrapped the object. It turned out to be an empty sheath, lacquered ebony in color with black steel fittings. Ringing the top of the sheath were evenly spaced black pearls. As her fingers traced down the sheath, they felt curls of black steel creating a faint tracing on the sheath, of multi-tailed foxes winding their way from the tip of the sheath to the top. With a smile, Yui-chan gave Jehane a scratching behind her ears, causing the kitsune to make happy noises.

“Thank you both.” Yui-chan said simply as the foxes helped her gather up all her belongings.

“Happy Birthday!” the two foxes chorused in Fox as Yui-chan stepped through another shadow portal to deliver her newest presents to her rooms.

By the wee hours of the morning, Yui sat quietly at her desk, feeling far younger than the candles on her cake proclaimed her to be despite being utterly exhausted. Her own special Black Friday had begun with well-wishes, wonderful gifts and treasured friends and progressed through a beautiful, sun-speckled afternoon of mayhem and madness.

Metal-and-wood dragons. Talkative woodland creatures. Dancing aliens and sparkling fireworks. In the strange land to which Aegon and Thinas had hijacked her, such marvels were commonplace and expected. Much food and fun later, after the fifth stomach-churning ride of loop-de-loops and nosedives on one of the dragons, she still knew that she preferred the nice, stable Mighty Couch, but that she'd always treasure a kidnapped afternoon of life-threatening danger and excitement. (Besides, even if she hadn't had a wonderful time, she'd have to remember it all for the new stories she'd weaseled out of Thinas. Blackmail material is always good. ;) )

With a little laugh, Yui leaned back in her chair and smiled at nothing, staring at the dark ceiling of her room.

Another year down, she thought, stretching the kinks out of her tired muscles, and another amazing birthday to cherish. I wonder if they all know how well they spoil me? My friends have managed to make this such a special day...

Standing, she slipped over to the bed and reverently set the beautiful scabbard, shadow-blanket, soft cloak and Wyvern's (probably purloined) book on the chair next to the freshly-arranged vase full of luminescent moon flowers. With a smile of utter contentment still on her lips, she leaned over to blow out the candle before crawling under the sheets to enjoy the kind of sleep that only happiness brings.

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes, everyone! I really appreciate your thoughts and great gifts and words, and it all serves to remind me how lucky and grateful I am to know each and every one of you. Here's hoping that your Friday has been at least as enjoyable as mine. :wizzie:

All the best,

Yui slept soundly, her presents lying safe and carefully wrapped nearby. Her dreams, as they were, were pleasant and strayed between the clouds and the sky.

Suddenly and silently, the room began to glow ever-so-softly, the luminescence seeming to emerge from the wall, giving the place a surreal appearance. There was a flicker, and then it returned to glowing oddly silverish light, like her whole room was suddenly made of the moon.

Across the room from her, Cioden sat where no-one had been a mere moment before, staring intently at her sleeping figure. Shadows danced over him in odd, sight-defying arcs, warping his figure in odd ways so that it seemed that he was sometimes thin, sometimes not, and sometimes all but his eyes disappeared.

He grinned, but there was no light behind it. Standing, he walked over to her and reached into his cloak. "You've been quite a bother, Huntress." he whispered. "Quite the bother indeed."

Pulling something out of an unseen pocket, he held it up to the meager light that still lit the walls and ceiling and floor. A silver coin, with an ever-seeing eye etched into one side and a circle with a dot in the center etched into the other. He flipped it once, caught it, and dropped it on the table next to her presents. His grin flashed again, and then he was gone as suddenly as he appeared. The glow left with him, and normalcy rushed in to claim the room as it's own.
