Katzaniel Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 I just wanted to note that my 500th post was the 100th reply and 400th view on a thread. (Funny how we sometimes notice these things...) And, my 501st post is the 1st reply and 1st view on a thread, but that's not nearly as interesting. Anyway, to make good use of this thread that I'm creating, I may as well implement an idea I had. * plucks an idea out of the air around her head and plops it into the post * Anyone up for a game whereby we recite lyrics from fairly popular (not necessarily current, just something most of us would recognize if we heard it) songs, and see who can figure out which song it comes from? Of course, anyone can look it up on the 'net, but how many can recognize the words without looking? Standing on the waters casting your bread While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing. Distant ships sailing into the mist, You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing. Freedom just around the corner for you But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/jokerman.html' target='_blank'>
Ozymandias Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Wow. That paints a real picture like no song I remember at this time. But crom, I have no idea what it is...
Katzaniel Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 Hint, then, Ozy... This from an amazing songwriter with a somewhat debatable talent for the actual singing.
Ozymandias Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Come to think of it, that *is* something I could easily picture as a Bob song. But I know not the titles of Dylan!
Katzaniel Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 (edited) Yup! The song was Jokerman. (lyrics here). Anyone else got a toughie? Edited June 23, 2004 by Katzaniel
Ayshela Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Well, hrmm. try this one.. Into the distance, a ribbon of black stretched to the point of no turning back a flight of fancy on a wind swept field standing alone my sense reeled a fatal attraction holding me fast, how can I escape this irresistible grasp? can't keep my eyes from the circling sky tongue-tied & twisted just an earthbound misfit, I ice is forming on the tips of my wings unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything no navigator to guide my way home unladened, empty and turned to stone
The Portrait of Zool Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly. I admit though I had to play it to make sure.
Ayshela Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 *laughs* was wondering how fast that one would go down =)
The Portrait of Zool Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Does that mean I do one? MuaHahahahaha! While prolly not so well known this is from a very well known band. Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream, It is not dying, it is not dying. Lay down al thoughts, surrender to the void, It is shining, it is shining. Yet you may see the meaning of within It is being, it is being. Love is all and love is everyone It is knowing, it is knowing. And ignorance and hate mourn the dead It is believing, it is believing. But listen to the color of your dreams It is not leaving, it is not leaving. So play the game "Existence" to the end Of the beginning, of the beginning
Peredhil Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". For someone who loves the Beatles as I do, that's a gimme. Linking to the words "shining" in yours, I present this verse in the chain of lyrics. Downstairs the big old house is mine Upstairs where the stars still laugh and they shine Downstairs where the big old house is mine Outside where the stars still laugh and Stars still laugh and shine And the stars still laugh and cry and shine And the stars still laugh and cry and shine And the stars still laugh and shine and shine
Katzaniel Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 That's funny, after reading the lyrics I thought "Beatles", but I don't think I've ever heard the song.
The Portrait of Zool Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 D'oh! Looks like I hold the record now Ayshela.
Katzaniel Posted June 24, 2004 Author Report Posted June 24, 2004 It looks like that one even includes the chorus, and still no one has gotten it... I think Peredhil has probably beaten my record for longest time now. Any hints?
Peredhil Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Stevie Nicks' Blue Lamp. Most commonly heard on the soundtrack to the original Heavy Metal movie. Do you have a song for us, Mira, or should I go again...
Mira Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Oh, I got one. The night sets softly With the hush of falling leaves, Casting shivering shadows On the houses through the trees, And the light from a street lamp Paints a pattern on my wall, Like the pieces of a puzzle Or a child's uneven scrawl. Up a narrow flight of stairs In a narrow little room, As I lie upon my bed In the early evening gloom. Impaled on my wall My eyes can dimly see The pattern of my life And the puzzle that is me. From the moment of my birth To the instant of my death, There are patterns I must follow Just as I must breathe each breath. Like a rat in a maze The path before me lies, And the pattern never alters Until the rat dies. And the pattern still remains On the wall where darkness fell, And it's fitting that it should, For in darkness I must dwell. Like the color of my skin, Or the day that I grow old, My life is made of patterns That can scarcely be controlled. Thats the whole song.
Peredhil Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 I know! I love that album. I'll let someone else have a chance first.
Regel Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Are you going to Scarborough fair? Paul Simon lyrics are hard to miss. Nice choice.
Mira Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Peredhil, have you heard any of the songs off The Paul Simon Songbook that he recorded after their first album, Wednesday Morning 3 A.M., but before The Sounds of Silence? Those are, in my opinion, some of the best arrangements of his songs ever recorded. And by the way, good job Regel, I suppose it is your turn.
Peredhil Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 That's Scarborough Fair? Smacks himself. I thought it was "Patterns", but yes, definitely has that Paul Simon air. Too many years since I've listened to it I guess. Mira - no I haven't heard anything from the PS Songbook. You've given me something else to which to look forward.
The Portrait of Zool Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 If that's the whole song, where does he say, "Are you going to Scarborough Fair?"?
Mira Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 My apologize. The song is Patterns, which happens to be off of the "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme" album, the same album on which Scarborough Fair/Canticle appears. I assumed that Regel's comments showed that he knew the correct answer, but was merely hinting at it in a round-about way.
