The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Those of you who weren't in troop 751 wouldn't get my title at all, so don't worry about it. :>) Anywho, on with the show!

It is a serene picture in the office of Ozymandias, Loremaster of The Pen is Mightier thna the Sword. The slow, measured strokes of pen on paper and the faint rustle of a desktop's contents as a cool wind (unconsciously pulled in through the boundaries of reality from his native land) blows through his window have been the only sounds all day.

Ozymandias taps his lips with the tip of his quill thoughtfully. This lasts for only a few seconds, however, before he realizes he's inking himself.

"Pleah! Pfha! Bleh! Gah." I really need to pay more attention, he chuckles to himself mentally.

It's been a long afternoon of nonstop movement for the Loremaster. Having only just finished convalescence in the past two days from a particularly vicious virus, he hit the floor running in a desperate attempt to get up to speed in overdue projects and unanswered mail from around the castle. After almost forty-eight hours of record-poring, file collecting, and hours of working with advisors, Ozymandias was finally over the first hurdle.

And promotions are finished, thought he with a smile. Overdue, to be sure, but at least twice so well deserved. It's about bloody time indeed.

Congratulations, one and all! You've earned it. (And I apologize profusely once more for my lateness)

Troop 139 here. I totaly got the title!

Mira quickly scans the list. Then does a double take when he sees his name on there.

There must have been some sort of mistake!

I had friends who were Boy Scouts and sang a song along those lines on occasion. Congratulations to all! And I'm certain there's no mistake, Mira. You deserve it as much as any. :P

*Hugs to all*

Ayshela drifts in and scans the list of those promoted. Zeroing in on one name in particular, she hurls herself at HopperWolf with shrieks of glee and congratulatory hugs! With a sheepish grin she recovers herself, looks over the list again, and cirulates giving well deserved congratulations, hugs and handshakes to all as appropriate.

WHEEEEEEE yays!!! Not a surprise in the lot, i must say, just well deserved recognition of work well done! (Though a few of you are rarer than we'd like.. oooooh, bad Ayshela, go to your corner!)

Gratz...

You Quill-Bearers...

shakes a cane at them and uses his firmest creaky Ancient voice

I expect y'all to really tighten up on spelling and grammar, to set an example for impressionable young Initiates!

wanders off muttering, "when I was a spry Quill Bearer... the first the Pen had! ... why, Ozymandias would make me use Starving Peasants for troops for every mispelled word! QBs nowadays.... Luxury!

:P

(Congrats)

Dragonqueen slips in quietly, and reads the notice out of bored curiousity. She shudders at the title, remebering her own torturous girlscout days. Her eyes go big when she spots her name. Reading it several times over, she can hardly believe it.

Wow...thanks bunches! I never really thought I would get promoted...

Dragonqueen leaves as quietly as she came in, but this time with a big smile on her face.

Ayshela flies across the Cabaret Room and *tackles* dragonqueen at the door, whirling her into a happydance and congratulating her heartily! With a warm hug, Ayshela whispers in her ear "never fear, i thought the very same thing."

HopperWolf is bowled over by a vast amount of glee and congratulatory hugs.

Thanks hun :) Always a pleasure. we must chat more, my dear. it has been too long since a whisky and chinwag at the fireplace.

And wow, finally made QB..... I'm in awe! I'm so excited I'd chase my own tail if i weren't in company. Thanks to the powers that be :)

ntraveler, I've got this to say. Who really cares? It's just a silly rank in a silly place.

Try to get more involved with the community, and you might see a promotion soon.

Or you can just pretend to be a little version of me, and even get me annoyed, either way it's your choice. I'm not going to stop you, and I'm not going to condemn you, cuz well, unlike some others, I don't care about any of this.

I just use this as a place to write down some ideas, and then I finish working on them later. Away from the eyes of elitest mentalities, and overly smug people.

Congratulations everyone!

Merelas brings in a bugle and blows on it ceremoniously, quite out of tune, if the truth be known.

Well done! May you perform as well at your new rank as you did at your old!

Oh, and no worries ntraveler, I'm sure they aren't ignoring you. Maybe you just need to do a happy dance, and then they'll be sure to spot you. ;):D

But I must say it is more fun being a lowly one...no one would think less of you if you were to wreak havoc. It's just a shame I can't get on IRC...no one would be safe - mwuahahaha!

From the FAQ.

Page: to be promoted to the rank of Page one must be at least mildly active and show some care for either their own or other's improvement. As Jechum put it, pages are members who are still growing, developing, promoting, and proving their worth to the Pen. Pages are members, but can not vote or see all the rooms. Respect is a very important value at the Pen is Mightier than the Sword to remember.

I really don't know what the current standards are. Ancient fits me all too well of late, and I have to admit, my reading of posts is somewhat scattered and random - I haven't read anything by NTraveler2 lately, but that isn't trying to say that you haven't been posting.

I'm gonna made a few observations though. Whether any of these apply to your case, I haven't a clue.

1) posting activity. Not just posting your own works, but posting on others.

2) respect. One of the cultural foundations of the Pen is respect for others, even when disagreeing. I'd suggest debating thoughts, not people, and always remember that even if someone can't love themself fixes a wry eye on X-Sabre, it doesn't mean you have to agree and validate their poor self-esteem. Setting an example of tolerance, and proving words with actions and consistency are a great way to get along with others.

3) It might not be "fair", but the Pen *IS* an elitest organization - we want people who are willing to grow as writers. It's a writing community. So like the FAQ says, you do have to prove yourself. Not just in skill, but ability to contribute to the community as well as receive from it. Those who are "receive only" do well to complain.

4) Fairs are what come to town with Ferris Wheels. Life is not fair.

5) It might not be you at all. It could be that those running this place have full time jobs, or don't have jobs and are trying to contribute while looking for a job, or full time students, or get sick, or are just fallable human beings who made a mistake. By assuming the fault was perceived in you, and taking the martyr's role, you assign the role of attacker to them. Attack leads to defense - and so the battle lines are drawn. Never assume malice when human fallability is possible. It allows others to change or grow, to admit mistakes in a non-hostile atmosphere, rather than separating people into armed camps of agreement or disagreement.

6) Don't compare yourself to what others have and you don't. One of the other cultural foundations is that everyone here is unique - just like all the rest.

Just some thoughts from a tired Ancient, with little time. Rough, unpolished, but meant well. Some may fit you or your situation, some might not. I really don't know. But you sounded upset, and THAT I wanted to acknowledge as real.

Hmm....I expected something longer. Heck, I may have even read that already in some past posting spree of mine.

Anyhow...to get this thread back on it's original track...who wants punch and pie?!?
