Wyvern Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 One million eyes are calmly staring at obscenity, vanity, lore, while one million voices are swearing over needless violence and gore. One million hands are clapping for sorrow, anger and strife, while one million minds are tracking a single celebrity's life. One million people are left in the cold as the counter-revolution is aired, while millions of thoughts from the angered and bold are abandoned for the timid and scared. One million lies and one million choices, one million strands labeled one of a kind are deafening one million pertinent voices for one million dollars, one at a time.
Alaeha Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 I like this. I'm not sure if I'm being overly nitpicky here, but wouldn't it be two million hands clapping? Or was only half the audience impressed? *Hugs* I absolutely loved the last stanza.
Peredhil Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 You continually amaze me with your freshness in old themes, creativity, and willingness to recreate yourself. I knew there was a reason I don't watch television, thank you for reminding me so poignantly. This, together with Poetic Justice's "Half-mast Patriot" to which I was listening recently, really show the greed that underlies so much of our media. Thought-experiment for the day - perhaps the mark of the beast from Revelations isn't physical, but a mental or spiritual mark, perhaps even a willingness to accept the hypocracy you've encapsulated here...
Vlad Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 This is so sweet. I love it. If you didn't call it "The Untelevised" I don't think I would have gotten that it is aboutthe media. But that's part of what makes it so good - it can be expanded or contracted and related to life as awhole, or something small and specific. I think I'm going to print this out and hang it up somewhere.
Zen Posted January 5, 2004 Report Posted January 5, 2004 The population is becoming so conditioned by what they see on television that anything on it that claims to be fact is so in the minds of the masses. Any other view that conflicts with that of the establishment is destroyed on air, thus preventing a popular movement to ensue with out massive effort. This piece flowed so nicely, it makes me picture people sitting in darkened rooms with blank stares and the glow of the tube on their faces, just responding dully to what they see on television. O I’m sorry for the rant. Great poem.
Loki Wyrd Posted January 5, 2004 Report Posted January 5, 2004 Nice topic, and a very nice job done with it. :wizzie:
Yuki Kokoro Posted January 5, 2004 Report Posted January 5, 2004 This is excellent. One of those poems that give me goose bumps. *shivers* These lines were great: "while millions of thoughts from the angered and bold/ are abandoned for the timid and scared" this really struck home, the way new and revolutionary things are dismissed because people are afraid of change or of offending someone. The last stanza was definitely my favorite though. The last two lines are just so chilling and painful. Excellent job putting such a complex topic and blend of feelings into poetry.
Merelas Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 Wyvern, old boy! You surprise me, writing so cynically about greed! Seriously though, I have to echo everyone else when I say that this is definately high-quality work. You deserve a standing ovation for this, and proudly, I offer one. The only thing I don't agree with the previous speakers on is the favorite stanza. Mine was the second-to-last in this, and especially the last two lines of that, which I know someone quoted but I'm too lazy to scroll down and look Truly, I applaud you. Well done. I hope you muster up some more, though I must say, this is hard to top.
