Damon Inferel Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 That is a very funny article, but the fact remains that some of the best and most pplayable games came from the ages. I could play super Mario Bros. for days! It was great. I have played a tank game for Atari, and the original Pong beats out the Playstation version any day! Those were games that held you in frustration because you wanted to now when the perpetual madness was going to end, but if it didn't, you didin't care! Old school games are amazing, and besides, FF1 and FF2 and such were for the original Nintendo. No die-hard RPG fan can say that those games sucked. Old games til the end! But, some of the new ones aren't as bad either. RPG Maker, FF... everything, GTA3/VC... There are some good ones, but most of them came out as cheesy 32 bit concepts first. Have you seen the first GTA?!

I was enraptured, and soon I managed to acquire the beloved cart. Oh the joys I went through as we destroyed monster after monster. Oh the tears I cried when Chaos decided he was going to cast Cure 4 on himself. These were the days of REAL gaming, when the final boss was at the bottom floor of an eight-level dungeon with all the previous bosses barring the way, when you didn't complain, you took it like a man. None of this "Final Fantasy X is too hard" whiny stuff. Back when gamers WERE gamers, jocks didn't own playstations, and nintendo was king. *sighs* I want that time back so bad, which is why I'm into emulation a lot. Viva La Rom!

I know my twelve year old sister doesn't sound like that, or have even half the comedic potential. But on the upside, the article is well worth the read. Had to stifle my laughter though, since I'm in a public computer lab. I don't know, really... I love some of the old-ish games (Any Zelda, for example, is great fun. Likewise Final Fantasy, and Kirby was fun for a while) But I still like to get together with my guy friends and kick their Fesses (thanks for the term, Celes ) as Princess Zelda, on Melee. Who says girls can't fight? But then... I'm sort of a generation straddler anyway, in terms of video games.

The ones I know are more hyperactive sounding, use worse words, a lot more often, and even occasionally they like/love/are addicted to, say, the original Mario Bro.s game (which is in the Nintendo, hooked up to my TV, ready to be played in a moments notice). But yeah, when kids are bad mouthing Tetris, ooh that irks my nerves SO BAD! I love that game. Got to level 13 once. Still haven't beaten Super Mario Bros 1, 2, OR 3 yet. As opposed to the uncounted times I've beaten newer games. In conlusion, the older games kick more ass, because I can sit for longer times playing Mario or tetris than I can GTA III or Smash Bros Melee. They're more challenging. Which would probably be one reason little kids don't like them.

Why we wanted to play Super Mario Bros is because we had TONS of fun with it. The same same goes with the ol' NES Zelda game, FF1, Duck hunt (who will forget the dog who laughed at you when you missed), the first Casltevania, the infamous Konami cheat code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A), the uber hard Ghosts and Goblins and so many more.

Every generation is different from the one before. That it's true and inevitable doesn't make the differences less noteworth, less interesting, or less worthy of discussion amongst those interested.
Wyvern Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 My favorite video games: 1) "Pick the video off of the shelf, then put it back" - a game played at the video rental store when you can't decide which movie you want to rent, and continously pick videos off the shelf only to put them back in their original position. 2) "Back of the video cassette case tongue twisters" - a game where you read the description on the back of the movie cassette casing as fast as you can, including the last names of obscure actors. 3) "Slow motion, fast forward, rewind" - a game in which you place a video into the VCR, and then hit buttons on the remote control to unleash funny effects. 4) "Pull the video tape out of the VCR tug-of-war" - a game played when your VCR eats your video cassette, and the video is already two days overdue from the rental store. Of course, with developments in recent technology, many of these classic video games have been replaced with more modern games, such as "Try to get your dog not to mistake the DVD for a frisbee hide-and-go-seek." ;-p Wyv- - who notes that while the original Final Fantasy was fun, it lacked a certain element that prevented it from ever being classic in his book... mainly plot. ;-p

Weeklies I couldn't give a stuff about, 'cause they were cheap as chips. But videos, on the other hand, where new release rental prices continued to rise, I instituted this ratings system. If the movie sucked, I would not rewind it. If it was good, I'd rewind it. If it was average, I'd only rewind it half way. Fortunately, I got a DVD drive before I got blacklisted

(Forgive me if I spelled your name wrong.) anyone who doesn't like Tetris... *bad images of taunting little kids by beating their PS2 with a baseball bat* I'ts not to say some of the new games are bad, but they seem to lack the certain adictiveness of the old games. They are all about graphics and flashy sounds then ever. I mean, in GTA3, you don't really need to have more than one radio station in the car because you hardly stay in one car long enough to get anything out of it. Normally, you just shoot it with a rocket launcher... >< In comparison, like miss Celes had said, they are all shine, but if you take it away you've got nothing. Just anopther engine to feed mindless gore and destruction in today's influencable minds. It's like comparing Star Wars 4, 5, and 6 to the new ones. The ones with good 'ol Luke and Han beat out Mr. Anakin and his queen anyday. (IMO) I miss all of the old stuff, but i do have to agree with Wyvern. I'm not sure if FF1 had a plot. I was a lot smaller back then, and all that mattered was swinging the sword and killing the bad guys... just out of curiosity... who says any FF game is too hard? It's like the last bowl of porridge in difficulty... "It's just right."

Whether it's stuff that they actually said or not, I don't know, don't care, but it seems possible. Stuff changes, people are different. I'm a big fan of classic games; back when we didn't have all these shnazzy graphics, games were *supposed* to be about good play, good challenge and failing those, a story? Well, maybe not the last one. Regardless, lots of the classic games rule, and I could play them for hours. Of course, lots of them sucked, too. (E.T., for example, is the worst paperweight I've *ever* seen.) All in all though, I'm not going to say what I like better. I enjoy many new games, and I enjoy many old ones. I rate them on a game-to-game basis. So many people forget that it's all about the play. As for the new generation of gamers? So what?! So they don't like classic games. They start on what's relatively new, so they have no choice but to compare the old stuff to the new stuff, as the new stuff being better. That's the way it's always going to be. For just about everyone, the first is always the best. Ultimately, that doesn't affect anything as far as I'm concerned. So what if those stupid little kids don't know what they're missing. We do! And by the way, FFX is *not* hard!! It has some challenging moments, but it's not hard! ...in fact, no FF is hard... they're all too easy!!! Mwuhahaha! ( I mean, they all have the odd difficult enemy or boss, but that's it! In all the games, there's a point where you get so powerful, or you can exploit something in the game, where nothing is a challenge anymore.)
DoomGaze Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 NEW SCHOOL OWNS OLD SCHOOL, THE GRAPHICS ARE WAAAAY BETTER!!!! errrrr, forgive me... hahaha, in my opinion both are even in different ways... i love a lot of the old school games, but i like new school games as well.... as an artist myself (or at least i deem myself to be one) i believe that CGs in a game are sometimes breathtaking, cause i am fascinated by the amount of detail is done to create them, as well as the in play graphics... but then when i think of old school, i find that even if they have the worst graphics ever, the story and the amount of extra searching for hidden things and so on in the game destroys the newer games... especially in FF series, there are so many things you can and find by searching, while i think the game developers have become lazy in that department... i will and always love to explore things in a game, either by randomly flying around in my airship and landing on islands or talking to every little person in a city... boy i miss that as for tetris it's a classic, but it does get boring after a while. Mario is always fun too most of the time, it also depends on the genre of game to that your playing... RPGs have drastically enhanced their graphics, but maintaining or even loweringall other categories. Racing games are one of the few genres that have improved in everything. Well enough from me, thats my 2 cents worth!

Problem is, they probably never played FFVI which is, in my opinion, the best FF in the serie. Here's my humble list of innovative and memorable games. - Pong (hey it started everything) - Burger Time - Donkey Kong - Pac-Man - Galaxian - Q-bert - Duck Hunt - Super Mario Bros - The Legend of Zelda - Dragon Warrior - Double Dragon - Final Fantasy - Castlevania - Ghost N' Goblins - Friday the 13th on Nes (my brother had a emulator of this game and it still manage to scare me) - Mario Cart - Out of this World - Zombies ate my Neighbors - Chrono Trigger - Street Fighter 2 - Mortal Kombat 2 - Final Fantasy 6 (which was released as 3 in NA) - Resident Evil - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Mario 64 - Chrono Cross - Alone in the Dark - The 7th Guest - Myst - WarCraft 2 - StarCraft - Diablo - Sim City - Civilisation - Master of Orion 2 - The Sims - Doom And so many more..

The Big Pointy One Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Y'know, I was just gonna say, I think FFVII was the FF that really brought most of the gamers into the series. And while everyone has their own opinion on which one is best, I think it was kind of a landmark in the series (Although I like most of the ones before seven better...) In a generation of gamers concerned about graphics, FFVII was a real stepping stone for the series. Not only that, it almost set a precedent for other games at the time (If I remember correctly, it was one of the best, graphics-wise, and one of the first games with FMVs, at least FMVs done as nicely.) All that aside, I think the defining point of all the FF games for me is the music. Sure, it's kind of gone downhill since X, and I haven't really given VIII a chance, but every other game in the series I've played has had *awesome* music. Favourite songs of mine include the original battle music, FF6's opera music, FF7's Boss theme and FF9's 'You're not alone' Yepyep.

The thing that was so great about games back in the day was that things were new and unspoiled. We didn't take them for granted. Nowadays it's different. I watch as my little brother (10 now) goes through games, never really appreciating them. It's sad, but I suppose our dependence upon our electronic toys is even more so.

I remember when I was a kid -- I ran around my neighborhood and was pretty active in sports. Now, all the kids just play games. In a sense, it's good, but only in moderation. Too many parents allow TV games to be a substitute babysitter. That being said, I don't remember Pong, but I have heard about it. I grew up with a Famicom, and when I was a teenager (about 13) I was in arcades where they had StreetFighter 2.

About those kids- I kinda agree some of the stuff they say seems a bit more intelligent than you'd expect, and a bit more vulgar... but at the same time, isn't it a little, well, stupid to overgeneralize them just because of their age? It is possible that a few kids here and there are a bit smarter than kids of that age from how we'd know them. Especially if they're nerds. ;p And I totally agree Madoka; kids should spend more time doing stuff outside. Hell, *I* should spend more time doing stuff outside, but then I'd die because it's so damn cold here. Yay for video games!

My parents pestered me and my siblings to go to play outside, especially during summer since we had no school, and the videogame was reserved for the rainy days. Hurray for the gym and I can't wait for the snow so I can practice cross-country skiing.
