Yatsuna13 Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 for the longest time i have killed my mind over just one question...this question has caused me unbearable pain and i have cried so many times wanting to end my curious thoughts about death... QUESTION???-What do you believe death is? What do you think it's like and what do you believe happens after our passing? i guess i ask you this question in hopes to console my mind thank you Yatsuna
Ayshela Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 death as in the moment life stops? i guess .. that really depends on how you define life and how you define death, doesn't it? a question like this is so based in personal beliefs, religious and philosophical, that you're apt to get either a wide ranging set of answers or none at all. <_> some of us are still figuring out for ourselves what we believe. *shrug* For me.. death is (intellectually) simply the moment when all life functions cease - the body and brain cease to function, or (emotionally) the point at which the pain and stress, pressure and unbearable tension of this which we call life, stops. What happens afterwards? i could not begin to tell you. i wish i had an answer which would satisfy your need to know, a need which i hold as well.. unfortunately the only ones who truly know are no longer in a position to tell us. <_> *hugs*
Alaeha Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Death is the moment in which your brain cannot be restored to activity. I've never really stopped to think about what happens after that... because to my way of thinking, it doesn't matter. The way I see it, if someone dies... then I can't communicate with them. If I die, then... if I cease to exist, I won't really care. If I'm reincarnated, I probably won't remember it. If I'm absorbed into some greater being... so be it. If a christian perspective wins out, then I'll go wherever the "you did your best" people go. I'll burn that bridge when I come to it. There's nothing, really, that I can do about it except to do my best with the cards dealt to me, so I don't bother to waste my time worrying about it. Sorry that I can't help any... *Hugs*
Yatsuna13 Posted November 13, 2003 Author Report Posted November 13, 2003 it's quite alright, i understand perfectly...thank you anyway for replying. i have a bad habit of throwing away some of the cards i am dealt Yatsuna
Ayshela Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 *shrug* some *should* be thrown away. the trick is to know which ones. <_>
Peredhil Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Hmmm. Biblical perspective: dead is three days and three nights. Prolly to rule out comas and such. background: Adam & Eve = body soul and spirit. died spiritually on the day they were booted. All until 40 days after J.C.'s resurrection: body and soul. spiritually dead (Ephesians.) soul life == living breathing creature. Obviously has a mind and choice. I think it's Leviticus that mentions that soul-life is considered to be in the blood - which explains injunction on not drinking it and makes the vampire craze really spiffy. also indicates that life is breath - "breathing one's last" and such-like. When body/soul dies, they are dead. The word most translated as hell is "the state of being dead". For afterlife options: the resurrections of the Just and Unjust. Current administration: born body and soul. opportunity to be "born-again" spiritually, which give the same choices Adam and Eve had - listen to spirit, or go by "common sense" and five senses. If die without spirit, same as above. If die with spirit: body dies, soul-life dies, spirit is "asleep" until zipped away when J.C. comes back to end this parenthetical note in the prophecies of the bible, avoiding the Daniel/John (revelations) "Wrath" prophecy stuff. Get a new body at this point, which is flesh and bone (spirit powered) instead of flesh and blood (soul powered). Prolly can do all sorts of the nifty things J.C. did after his resurrection, like ignoring locked doors and such. For those who hang around for the wrath and the stuff after, it's all pretty obvious from there. Anyway, that's a summation in a nut-shell.
Regel Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 (edited) What is death? It’s the door out of this world. That's all I know for sure and as Neil Young once wrote “and once you gone you won’t come back, when your out of the blue and into the black!” It is what we are hard wired to avoid. It is programmed into our very cells and it awaits us all. I have no desire to rush the process so I have tried to do the sorts of things with diet and life style choices that will allow me to enjoy what time is left on my meter. It is not something that I fear but by saying that I don't mean I diffuse bombs for a living. I don't take dangerous risks for thrills. It is what Black is to white. Two sides of the same coin sort of speak. Life and death are connected. With the natural world spring is birth and renewal and winter is death and decay. You can't have one without the other my friend. I would say that I am entering late summer hell maybe early fall in my life cycle and Yatsuna13 I would guess that you are still pushing through spring flowers. I have already seeded my replacements. They have turned out to be decent people and I am proud of each one. While I don't believe in reincarnation I do believe that the genes that we are comprised of reemerge. So we never really die entirely so long as we had living relatives. My belief structure tells me I have a room waiting for me. (I hope there is room service.) It will be a home coming for me. In my minds eye I see love ones that I have lost waiting to greet me. Reunions with people I dearly miss. My time remaining will be spent enjoying the living and not worrying about those things that I cannot control. On a personal note, I hope my winter is short. Edited November 14, 2003 by Regel
Canid Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 (edited) My own beliefs dictate that death is simply the end of life; that a person's being is contained entirely in the chemical signals of their brian and that when their life ends, so too does the essence of that person. A sensory void which one does not experience. Thus the only thing we have to experience is life - and it should not be wasted or unnessesarily shortened. Edited November 14, 2003 by Canid
Damon Inferel Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Death is what we are dealt when we are no longer serving our purpose. When we die of a natural death (old age... nothing else) we have fulfilled our purpose to the best of our ability and we are to continue that purpose in our next life. however, as we all have free will, we have the option of fulfilling our purpose or not. should we choose to defy what our 'optional destiny' is, Death will manifest itself in the object or person that brings about demise. There will inevitably be a second chance unles your soul is destroyed, but for the moment, we are erased and possibly lectured by some higher spirit... Though the last part is more of a joke. Clinically, death is the moment that the electric currents stop flowing through your body and your brain becomes inactive. There is no consciousness, and all of your other organs follow suit in the shutting down. That's why blood coagulates after death. The heart has stopped pumping it. But, that's my opinion...
reverie Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 (edited) death is silence... a final stillness of the soul. where we rest in blessed dreamless sleep forever... or it's like regal said... it's a door... The jurys still out for me... while my protestant judea-christian(on 3rd doctrine now) mindset battles my partially buddist heritage that opened the door for toaist and gnostic perspectives; all balanced against the backdrop of our ever increasing hedonist/humanist society... so pretty much my spiritual aspects a mess... as a palm reader once told me..."you have an awesome spiritual foundation, you're just neglecting it..." revery the dreamlost "la, la...(teletubbies)" the dream continues... The Big Pointy One Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 Hrm, I always figured death was that skeleton in the robe with the scythe... or maybe a spell in FF6... *Stick is immediately pelted with various vegetables and pointy things until he is no longer visible* "What?"
Aardvark Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 When you die, you go to a room with an old man who gives you a scorecard, based on how you lived Vs the environment you lived in The more of an individual you are Vs how much you can be without compromoising your survival (but bonus points go to those who are executed for expressing their beliefs and opinions), the higher your score. Then you can go do whatever you want. If you want oblivion, door to the left. Heaven's on the right, Hell's down the corridor if you feel you deserve it. Reincarnation? No probem! Just grab a parachute and jump through the hole in the floor.
Zariah Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Hmmm. Thoughts of what could be: Death of the body: Interperted as either the passing of ones own spirit from the body OR it could be even the destruction of one's own body with drugs or physical torture/pain. Death of the spirit or mind: Giving up of hope, will to live, will to survive, will to change. Perhaps when one is in a coma, the spirit or mind is alive, but the body does not function as a body should. When someone is numb of pain they can be referred to or refer to themself as being "dead" inside. My thoughts: Death is a PART of life. As humans, we cannot live longer than our bodies can handle. Also, it is a recognition that our spirit is ready to leave behind the body and move to another place. Perhaps our spirits wait for a day that God returns and judges how well we have lived our life. Then we go to Heaven or Hell. Perhaps we go to a heaven or hell automatically depending on how well we lived our life and served the Lord. Perhaps we are reincarnated and enter the world again. Perhaps we enter another solar system as another being with or without recall of this life. Perhaps we cease to exist entirely. Perhaps Earth is Hell and if we are good, we can move on, and if we are bad we are then reincarnated on Earth again until we do it right. Perhaps we become spirits that are trapped until we do some particular task to make what we did wrong right. Perhaps we know nothing of after life and have made all of these example up for our own comfort. Personally I believe that there is God, and he is a Just God. Not Mean, but Fair. Not Mushy, but Loving. And if we live our lives the best we can, with all intention of following his messages to us, and walking in the footsteps of his messenger and Son, Jesus then one day whether it be the day we die or the day mentioned in the Bible as Judgement Day, we shall be in Heaven. A place where we are not judged by each other. A place of no suffering. A place of true spiritual awakening and oneness with God and with each other. A place that is worth all the pain we go through here on Earth. While others have other beliefs is thier higher power, the same thought remains: If we try our best here, later will be the reward. Anyways. The best advise I would give to someone who has no clue of the unknown would be to find a place (in your heart and mind) where you can know that comfort of later begins with your life today, and that being the best person you can here will result in a better afterlife. Just my thoughts. My Opinions. My feelings. If you disagree, take no offense.
Lady Celes Crusader Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Death is when your body is no longer functionning for numerous reasons (ie your brain is too heavily damaged, your heart had stopped beating, etc). But beyond that, I have no idea.
