DarkPainInside
Living in a society like ours is pointless. We thrive on greed anger and hate. We are constantly stressed and upset. But it dosent have to be this way. We can escape. There is an answer, and its simple; Freedom. Don’t live by their stupid rules or hierarchies if you don’t want to, don’t wear what the fashion magazines want you to wear, if you don’t agree with them, don’t conform, don’t agree, and speak out about it! Don’t let things happen that you don’t want to; injustices, oppression; turn your music up, tell people you think the government sucks, and see what they say; make people think for themselves. Why bother with money, reputation, or power? Does it really matter what type of car you own or where you live? With out society, culture and rules, we would all be one large happy group of people; no differences, no worries! WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH THAT?!? With out culture, and traditions, apparently we would have nothing to do; and that’s why they exist; to give a ‘meaning’ to life. But why should you follow their rules, when they make so many people unhappy!? Peer pressure, conformity and ‘classes’ should not exist, But they do, because of our human-made ‘civilisation’. Run against it. Before its too late, and we are all swallowed up by corporate giants. The ‘cool’ have the latest clothes and hair-dos, they are also adept at crushing others to make them selves feel good; hence the ‘cool’ ones and the ‘losers’. There are prime examples of this happening everywhere; the schoolyard, the streets and in the work place. ‘Losers’ are made to feel worthless, under-privileged and basically like ‘scum’, just because they are different form the mainstream of society; they could have different ideas about life ‘(free-thinkers’), different religions, have a disability, or different sexuality. These people end up not giving a damn about what other people think about them; they have cared and been hurt by ‘the cool ones’ too many times; and it is not worth it in the end, when you always have to deal with it, day after day. ‘Free thinkers; people unconstrained by anything thought controlling. Society, Religion, Government, all of them try and control you. Most of the time they succeed, most everyone falls to their control, except us.’ {(www.hulla-balloo.com) Quote by Jeremy Hammond.} -This is what I am talking about, people constantly being oppressed by their peers, are then forced to become distant and form their own groups, apart from society; these are the ‘losers’ I am talking about; most have to show incredible strength of character to survive ‘the cool ones’ and at the end still have their individuality, otherwise they would just drown in a sea of sadness, and give in to depression and suicidal thinking; become a mere shadow of what they would have been if stupid ‘pecking orders’ weren’t in place. Alaeha
With out society, culture and rules, we would all be one large happy group of people; no differences, no worries! Without society, culture, and rules, we would find ourselves in a new society, culture, and rules set up by whoever happened to take power first. It is the nature of human beings to form organizations, structures, and communities. Personally, I'd rather be led by an incompetent leader who's held in check than a ruthless dictator, such as Hitler or Mussolini. Bleh... I'm tired, I don't have the energy to candycoat this... so I'm not going to waste my time on it anymore... I just wanted to say that I don't think you'll get the rise you're hoping for here. If you're looking for advice on how to improve your results, I'd recommend studying Lenin and the Russian Revolutions.
Peredhil
Peredhil, on vacation, wanders near enough to hear the impassioned words. Listening, he hears echos of the same pain that motivated Janis Ian, of his generation, to write her song, "At Seventeen." Nodding to some points, politely disagreeing but understanding others, he listens to the end. Hmmm, "fair" is what come to towns with ferris wheels, but humanity does cry for justice in my experience, it just can't agree on what it is. Although I don't quite agree all people are created equal, his hands unconsciously cup protectively over a lower part of his body, as my first view in the men's locker room showers after sports convinced me that statement isn't true... Zariah
At first, when I came to realize that I was different, that I didn't fit in to the "crowd", when I saw that people were suffering and those who weren't were not helping those who were, I wished. I wished that everyone had equal money, equal opportunity. Then I realized that if the way that Castro dominates Cuba, where everyone has their lives planned out for them and everyone "has the same", that really, Castro has it good and everyone else is suffering there. No matter what changes, what could be "different" it will be the same idea: That some have is easy and well and some have it hard and suffer. Humans whether they want to admit it or not, are like viruses. They use each other. Now that isn't always a bad thing. For example, I use my boyfriend as a listener of my problems; I use him to support me. That's not a bad thing, because he does the same to me. It could be re-termed to "friendship". And some use others for power, or money, or image. It's just how we are as humans. While the "government" or "society's image" are "not fair" to those who don't fit in, it would feel the same to others if they were the ones who didn't fit in and we did. You win some, or you lose some. The goal would be to help those who have it worse than you. While merely giving money to charity seems like it’s not much of a help, maybe you could join the Peace Corps and spend time with them. Making a difference in one person’s life, could fill that void that makes you feel "left out". I do understand that even if you could "fit in" you wouldn't want to. Neither would I, but the feeling of being "the odd man out" does bring emotions of loneliness or anger. I think that also, if you have belief in a higher power, you could ask him/her to guide you to a better understanding of why things are the way they are. Perhaps you were just born in the wrong century. I know I feel that way. But I think that trying to rebel against what is, doesn't necessarily mean starting a revolution of anger. Martin Luther King was a peaceful man, and he made a HUGE difference. Just hold on to your principles and try to understand that human nature is a big factor to as why we use each other and why the choices that people make leave others out. At least that is part of what I think (for the time being).

Peredhil
There will be society whenever two or more people gather, or one person populates the memories of interactions in their mind. society is interaction with others. It is the type of society, and the type of interactions which matter. The Pen is a society. If you search the Walls, you'll find its mission statement. If you read through old threads up to the present, you'll see the ever-changing variations on theme of how the mission statement has been implemented at that time. In my opinion, looking at the Pen (which I find exceptional), I am validated that all societies aren't innately bad. The problem with society, to loosely quote someone, is that it has people in it. oh - equality. I agree, equal doesn't imply identical. The sense in which I used it was that, when all the equations on both sides are resolved, the resulting value is equal. I just didn't see it in the locker room, summing up physical attributes - you might say I came up short in that equation. In some classrooms, I came up long. In others, equal to some, short to others, long to more. Now, building on that, it is easy to see that it depends on HOW you define the equations! If all human comparison were based solely on the physical, it would be rather easy to resolve, but unrealistic. I see an example of that in the media modeling craze. By taking the bodies of less than 1% of humanity and portraying that as the standard (models and supermodels), it sells countless cosmetics, surguries, magazines, pshrink appointments on self-esteem, etc etc. I'm sure the "winners" of that equation are comfy with that. It's human nature to want to be on top. Which is why I'm so careful with revolutions of any type - nearly all of them want to replace one social equation balanced against the revolutionist with another equation that has the revolutionist come up long. In seeking through life, the only actual equality I've found was Christianity - and the thousand various implementations and corruptions of those implementations I see tells me that its mission statement is misunderstood, or is being used by revolutionaries - as an excuse or justification for why they should be better than someone else. Meep, have to get my youngest out the door for school. Zips away
Damon Inferel
OOOH! Anarchy! Meow! Alas, dear comrade in this system of which we are dominated by the media and other more oppressive beings, I have bad news. While i certainly do not agree with Society (which is why I capitalize the 'S'... Society is a thing, not an organization) I have to tell you that you are already conforming by working against the Society itself. We are put into the group of rebels, and thus we are already classified by our beliefs in misbelief of conformity. I truly am one of the few on this site who you may get a rise out of because of the fact that I abhor this order we have crafted with each other, but in the end we are all classified and put into stereotypical categories. It frustrates me to no end when I can go to the mall and notice that everybody has their own differences, but if you see past the veil of the minor imperfections, they all look the same. yes, conformity does control us... or at least it controls some of us. I have my shares in interests with other people, but in a way I am different by large. I despise the trendy and new and I do what I an to stand out... but subtly. The point is, that in order to stand out in Society, you must blend in and be a silent stand-out. do not let people know that you are against them and do what you must to survive in this oppressive world and nothing more. we, as humans, are bound to be confined to laws or our nature of evil will consume and destroy us. Everything a person has to do to be an anarchist (without alerting the military) has to be subtle. For example: I'm a guy, but I wear my hair long. There have been many a displeased gaze at my hair because it is long and I refuse to cut it. I do not want to concern myself with hairstyles or whatnot. I don't generally buy what is in magazines. I have to buy from stores because that's necessary, and thus making me a capitalist in the end, but i do it for myself. i do not follow suit with others, but i do so silently. Anarchy should be as murder... silent, subtle, and unknown. Being an outright outcast and voicing the expression of freedom is going to cause Society to classify you as a rebel, and in a world where we do not want to conform, we do not want to be classified either... in effect, you are right in saying that everyone is equal and that we should do as we please, but perhaps it is more noticeable when you openly defy something so standard in a subtle manner... I'm running out of time on this computer, or i'd type for a while... Thank you for starting this thread!

Salinye
I actually tend to find many anarchists and their arguments inconsistent. It's not that I don't see some of the same problems with the world that they do, but I think many times their ways of solving them or where they place the blame is sensationally misplaced. ~Salinye
Falcon2001
Society isn't your friend, but it's not your worst enemy ever. Most people would figure me to be an anti-society-type person, and really, I am...but subtly. I wear whatever I want to - I refuse to wear black all the time anymore because really I'm just getting a bad image by looking like a freaking vampire wannabe. I'd much rather just wear jeans. Yes I wear my long sleeves underneath my short sleeve tshirts. Yes I'll wear a collared shirt with a sweater and look like some college kid or something. Yes I'll wear all black with a geeky shirt. I've got long black hair that's down to my chest now, and a bit of a beard too (needs to get a photo now that he's got his beard nice and trimmed), and most people that see me on any given day categorize me until they realize that I don't subject myself to a singular fashion statement. Also, I refuse to reduce myself to being mean to people in an attempt to distance myself from their 'society of conformity' thing. I have all sorts of friends. I don't worry about society trying to conform me, 'cause they don't have a chance. I do what I want, when I want, and how I want to - 'cause that's real living. I'm good friends with all my teachers, even though they're part of this mind-screw society. And you know what? I enjoy benefits from that. I would suggest learning to live with society, 'cause if you stop and take some time to analyze it, you can make it work for you, like I did. Wyvern
After DarkPainInside has ended his speech on anarchism and numerous Pen members have offered their comments and thoughts on the issue, Wyvern decides to take the stage for his own piece of political propaganda. Tapping the microphone and causing it to screech loudly in the process, the overgrown lizard apologizes to the audience before clearing his throat of a few ashes and hissing: "Living in a monetary system like ours is pointless. We thrive off of green anger and hate, which make us constantly stressed and upset. But it doesn't have to be this way. We can escape. There is an answer, and it's simple: 'Wyvern's 10 year total interest no downpayment double negation 5% tax break minus additional fees scam'... errr... 'plan!' Abandone your previous set of limitations and hierarchies and try these new ones on for size! Don't become a slave to your finances, grasp them with a firm system of control. After all, if you begin to feel frustrated with them, all you need to do is give them away! And with this new payment plan, you'll be able to give all your money to Wyvern at no additional charge." The crowd of listeners stares at Wyvern in silent confusion... A light cough is heard from a distant hall. "Why bother with money? Does it really matter what kind of car you own or where you live? Don't you think that I could benefit more from them?" Further silence as people in the audience begin shaking their heads and filtering out of the room... "Wait!" cries Wyvern in dismay "I haven't even provided the links to all the evil genious webpages yet!" ;-)
Appy
Free... hmmm.. allow me to share MY freedom. First: I always have to chuckle a bit when I see all those anarchists and wanna-be rebels shouting that they hate the society and will never follow a trend. I chuckle because what most don't realise is that they ARE following a trend.. the trend to kick against the esthablisment... it's as old as the first time some human stood up and made descisions for other humans to be guided by. Now, my freedom, where to start... I used to be a rebel. Refused to wear anything that the "popular group" wore at that time as default. Hated rules and kicked against the esthablisment (school and parents at that time). Barely stopped at actually Kicking teachers. I cannot tell you when I changed my ideas.. I have no idea myself about the when.. but slowely I did. I started to notice more and more that it was actually popular to be a rebel, in whatever way. So I stopped and sat down and thought about what I wanted. (Later on I was confirmed on rebelling being a trend. After highschool many of the 'always-thought-to-be-popular-group told either me or my best friend that at the time WE had been the group everyone wanted to be part of... Because of our no-non-sense policy) I moved out of my parents house and started art academie. I immediatly noticed it was even worse there.. it was a trend to kick all art rules, ideas of art and most of all.. they had the strange idea that ANYthing could be art, as long as it was made by an artist... I quit the school after only 2 months. Moved to the city my bf lived in at that time. Great group of friends.. and the best thing I learned there... being yourself at all times is what Freedom is about. Non of my friends cared about what other people thought of them. They did what they liked. So that meant that we had one who liked everything from punk to metal, one who started to fall in love with ska, me experimenting with the rythm and solitude of gothic and the gf of one of the others who loved dance music and trendy clothes. When in contact with other humans we did not judge, we communicated in our own way, which meant being interested in almost anything. It always struck me on how fast (usually 5 minutes) we got contact with other people when on something festival wise... it almost seemed that people noticed that we did not judge and basically were good at having a good time.. with anyone. We were FREE. And that philosophy is what I still carry with me today. Humans have a tendency to conform, I agree.. but humans also always have a choice. I make the choice to live comfertable, so I pay my insurance bills, make sure I don't spend too much money so we can Also pay the telephonebills, and make sure I don't cross the law because I'd hate to spend any time behind bars. If I see something clothe-wise that I like and looks comfertable, I try it on and it fits, I buy it. I am too lazy to follow what the latest trend is.. so I don't. But I'm not kicking against those people who like to follow the latest trend.. A happy human is unlikely to get in my way I could go hating the esthablisment and live on/off the street, so that no government can take my money to spend it on useless stuff.. but like I said.. I like living comfertable Enough rant.. my 2 cents and a good luck too. *walks towards the door mumbling about how she promised herself Not to respond to this thread and shakes her head.. too late* *Appy out*
Salinye
The aliens stood in silent observation of the embodied multi-raced creatures below them. So many different types of species all living and coexisting in one place. Some having only one purpose for their lives, others having several. It seemed to the aliens that some were more important than others, while some were merely existing doing their duties without any recognition at all. “Interesting creatures. You see there where we’ve gone down and cut through their world? All those red covered creatures came immediately to rebuild what we had ruined. They even rebuild it remarkably similar to the way it was originally. It’s as if they can’t break out of their own mindsets. Oh, and you see there. When we dropped pollutant materials into them that particular crew of creatures immediately rushed in to break the poisons down and disperse them properly.” One alien said breaking the silence. “It’s odd they don’t deviate out of their own driven purposes. Why do you think that is?” The second alien asked. “I’m not sure, perhaps they’re forced to act the way they are individually expected to?” He answered thoughtfully. “No, I’ve been studying for a long time. I think they’re controlled by that larger structure of creatures up there.” He pointed. Nodding the other agreed. “Yes, that group definitely dominates the rest of them. It’s a wonder none of the creatures rebel.” “Oh, they have in other studies we’ve done.” “Really? Fascinating, what was the result.” “Devastation. Destruction. The entire network of existence became completely unbalanced to the detriment of it’s very society.” “Interesting.” Pulling a 7 fingered rubber glove off of his hand with a snap the alien scientist put the scalpel down. “Ahh well, let’s break for lunch.” “Sounds good to me.” With that they left the human strapped onto the lab table. There would be more time to study this unusually efficient world of coexisting organisms and creatures later.
