The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

~ I once heard someone (Lady Celes I think) say there's still a lot of room for different tongues here... soo... I present my very first german poem ~

Manchmal

Manchmal werden mir die Wörter geklaut

Die, die dafür da sind, das ich reden kann

Manchmal werden mir die Bilder genommen

Die, die dafür da sind, das ich sehen kann

Manchmal werden mir die Geräusche gestohlen

Die, die dafür da sind, das ich hören kann

Aber nie verschwinden die Gefühle

Die, die dafür da sind, das ich Leben kann

----------------------------------

Rough on-the-spot translation (it's horrid, might try again later on)

Often

Often they steal my words

Those that are there, so I can speak

Often they steal my pictures

Those that are there, so I can see

Often they steal my sounds

Those that are there, so I can hear

But never do feelings dissapear

Those that are there, so I can live

I can speak German about half as well as I can speak Spanish and Latin. And I know about twelve phrases in each, along with a (optimistically) twenty-word vocabulary per.

But I read and reread your poem before scrolling all the way down before I looked and realized you'd included the English too, you rascally Appy you. :>)

So here is my unbiased and technically illiterate observation on Manchmal: I lke dit a good bit. Though I couldn't understand anything specific other than "die" "das" "da" and "leben", the overall rhythm and meter made it sound like a slow, methodic chant, and the word and sentence structure alone made the speaker sound quiet, introspective, and slightly sad.

Imagine my surprise when that held true in the English translation. Good show. :>)

Nyyark, Danke Schön! Nicht das ich alles verstehe was du da sagt aber es ist eine schöne Überraschung jemanden zu finden der Deutsch liebt... ich habe es immer gehasst *giggle* Jetzt das ich immer Deutsch im fernsehen höre gehen meine gedanken auch manchmal auf Deutsch...

[edit; figured I'd translate my little ramble there]

(Translation:

Nyyark, Thank you! Not that I understand all that you are saying there but it is always a pleasant surprise to find someone who loves german... I always hated it *giggle* Now that I always hear german on tv my thoughts often are in german aswell...)

Ok enough german lol *winces a bit being sure there's a lot of mistakes in those sentences*

Thanks all.. that's really all I wanted to say ^_^

Mein Deutsch ist sehr schlect... so I will continue forth in English (though I sometimes wonder if that's much better. LOL).

It is a beautiful piece. Both in german and in english you have managed to carry a cadence through it that suggests something with an innate and natural flow, and with the bittersweet tone of the poem, it is easy to hear that flow as dripping water... tearlike, yet with utter constancy in it's rhythm.

*is thankful she didn't have to try to say that in German*

Looking back I realised I had promised a better translation, and it was needed ;)

So, here you are ^_^

Translation:

Often my words are nicked

Those, that are there, so I can speak

Often my pictures are taken

Those, that are there, so I can see

Often my sounds are stolen

Those, that are there, so I can hear

But never do feelings dissapear

There are some things that languages other than English can exude in massive amounts. It seems to me that a dark and bainful mood is much more effective in the glutteral utterances of Die deutsche Sprache :)

The english sounds like a poem, the german sounds like a prayer or a incantation, ooooh *shivers*

hmm... we should translate it into French :P

Well... it's come from the english version of Appy.

--[snip]--

Souvant,

Souvant ils dérobent mes mots

Ceux qui sont là, pourtant je puis parler

Souvant ils dérobent mes images

Celles qui sont là, pourtant je puis voir

Souvant ils dérobent mes sons

Ceux qui sont là, pourtant je puis entendre

Mais jamais mes sentiments ne disparaissent

Ceux qui sont là, pourtant je puis vivre.

--[snip]--

I guess I changed a bit the meaning of the original work... It's more sad in french.
